John completed this task about five years before the original John Wickand Marcus’s friendly relationship with John and his role as a mentor of sorts would make it perfectly reasonable for him to appear in the anime. Willem Dafoe’s Marcus was practically forgotten in the John Wick franchise

After Three Sequels, Dafoe’s Marcus Wasn’t Even Mentioned Again

No matter how much Marcus is involved in the John Wick anime, the show has a chance to right a mistake the franchise has been making regarding Dafoe’s character for a decade. Marcus was an incredibly important character in the first John Wickbut the three subsequent films completely forgot about him. Marcus saved John’s life, died for his decision, and was the reason John went after Viggo and earned the wrath of the High Table. In a way, all John Wick the franchise happened because of Marcus, but none of the sequels mention his name.

In some ways, the entire John Wick franchise happened because of Marcus, but none of the sequels mention his name.

Marcus had essentially no legacy beyond the first John Wickbut the anime has a chance to change that. Even Halle Berry’s Sophia has a hinted backstory and a few lines teasing how she met John, but Marcus gets no such treatment. Although it is a prequel, the John Wick the anime could bring Marcus back into the public’s mind and give him a better send-off, one that is more deserving of how important he was to John. Fans will see Marcus as the formative part of John’s life that he was, which would go a long way toward fixing how the sequels forgot him.

Marcus is a mystery that the John Wick anime should solve

Marcus’ story deserves to be developed further and wouldn’t ruin his mystique

THE John Wick The anime’s decision to portray John’s impossible task has already proven controversial. This threatens to remove some of the legend and mystique surrounding Keanu Reeves’ character, and these Baba Yaga rumors have been some of the most interesting parts of the entire franchise. Marcus, however, would not be in such danger. John Wick revealed almost nothing about Marcus’s story other than his connection to John, and could easily flesh out his story without ruining its mysterious appeal. On the contrary, fleshing out Marcus’ story could actually give it even more fascination.

Marcus is an example of how John Wicknatural storytelling can really fail. There is currently not enough information about it to make it worth investigating or theorizing about. The most interesting John Wick characters are those who seem well known but actually have a hidden part of their story, like Winston. The anime could do the same for Marcus, telling just enough of his story, perhaps in the form of its own legends and rumors. This would make Willem Dafoe’s Marcus one of the most intriguing characters in John Wick without making it a completely known entity.
