The last thing Hogwarts Legacy 2 needs is Harry Potter

HBO’s new show based on Harry Potter books seem to be linked to Hogwarts Legacy 2 somehow, and while it’s unclear what this will mean for the game, it seems like a somewhat odd choice. THE Harry Potter series is for the Wizarding World as THE Lord of the Rings and Tolkien’s Mythos or how Skywalker Saga is for Star Wars. It’s the main pillar of the world and what most mainstream fans know about, but it’s also almost the only thing fans have.

While there are Wizarding World spin-offs, not all have been successful without the elements of Harry Potter being front and center. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has been a successful theater show for a few years now, but literally Harry Potter in the name. THE Fantastic Beasts the series started off well but stalled after a few disappointing films. Hogwarts Legacy was left as the only major successful Wizarding World spin-off isn’t directly tied to the Boy Who Lived, but it looks like it could be changing.

Hogwarts Legacy 2 should focus on new parts of the wizarding world

Harry Potter needs more spin-offs to grow

Although Harry Potter is one of the biggest franchises in the world, the universe itself seems very small outside of the main series. The franchise is not that old compared to others like Star WarsTolkien or Marvel Legendarybut it’s near the top in popularity and needs to grow like those franchises rather than relying on its main series. Hogwarts Legacy did a great job expanding the world with its late 1800s setting, but tying the game’s sequel into the main series again feels like more of a step backwards than forward.

With Hogwarts having a rich history, there are many eras that Hogwarts Legacy 2 could and probably should visit rather than retread old ground. The HBO series already has a narrative that is unnecessaryseeing as the film series is still beloved and holding up well, and tying a sequel to a popular game to it isn’t going to help that narrative. This also seems unnecessary, and the excitement of seeing something new Hogwarts Legacy 2 it appears to be being removed as a result.

Hogwarts Legacy has too much rich lore to cover without Harry Potter

The Wizarding World Needs to Be More Than The Boy Who Lived

A Hogwarts Legacy character with big eyes.

Hogwarts Legacy 2 has the opportunity to transform the Wizarding World into something much more, and there is a lot of lore that can be covered. New lore can also be created to give even more depth to this world, similar to what Knights of the Old Republic did for the Star Wars universe. Although Harry Potter will always be the main pillar of the Wizarding World, it needs to be more than just the Boy Who Lived so that there are more beloved characters outside of the main series. Harry Potter needs its own equivalent to KOTORDarth Revan, for example.

Ultimately, it seems like the Wizarding World is almost afraid to go any further Harry Pottersince the series cannot serve as a crutch if it does not remain central. This makes sense, given that the Fantastic Beasts the series failed a lot. Although there was enough success to begin development in Hogwarts Legacy 2having the series return to Harry Potter seems like the safe option, rather than letting her follow the natural path the first game set for her.
