Less than a year after the premiere of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and SnakesA brand new installment in the franchise was announced with the reveal of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Ripping. Beginning with the 2008 publication of Susan Collins’ dystopian YA novel, The Hunger GamesThe series concerns the post-apocalyptic country of Panem. In the world, each district must send representatives to compete in the annual Hunger Games competition in which they must fight to the death against the teams of other districts.

With much about the prequel movie still shrouded in mystery, the latest news confirms the plot details for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Ripping. The news broke when the details surrounding author Susan Collins’ next book were finally revealed to the public. The announcement confirms that Haymitch Abernathy is indeed the protagonist of the story, and that the 50th Hunger Games will be the setting. Although this is not technically the synopsis of the movie, it is safe to say that the film will follow the plot of the book closely.

“Sunrise on the Reaping” will revisit the world of Panem 24 years before the events of “The Hunger Games,” starting on the morning of the cut of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the second quarter wave.

As the day dawns on the 50th annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the neighborhood spring, twice as much tribute will be taken from their homes. Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves. When Haymitch’s name is called, he can feel all his dreams shatter. Torn from his family and his love, he is shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who is almost a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town. As the games begin, Haymitch realizes that he has been set up to quit. But there is something in him that wants to fight… and that fight reverberates far beyond the deadly arena.

Although it’s a ways off, Lionsgate announced a release date on the same day that the company revealed they would be adapting Suzanne Collins’ latest book. Coming a little more than a year after the release of the book of the same name, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Ripping Will debut in theaters on November 20, 2026. However, with a release date so far away, it’s always possible that some shuffling could happen over the next few years that displaces it from its originally scheduled slot.
