You may be surprised to learn that Fishnet was the first television show to be adapted into a feature film in 1954. Although television has produced some of Hollywood's biggest movie stars for decades, most successful TV series remain in their intended small-screen format. The most celebrated films have become television shows and prequel or sequel series, which include Cobra Kai, Fargoand the recent Dune movies with Dune: Prophecy.
Successful television shows certainly also attracted their fair share of feature films afterward. Fishnet became the first to do so. Some famous examples include Vice Miami (2006), Rua do Pulo 21 (2012) and more than a dozen Star Trek films. Recent examples include Breaking Badwhich spawned the film's sequel El Caminothe next Community film and Ryan Gosling's recent action comedy The fallen guy. Many of these shows were considered excellent, which inspired their potential for feature films.

Fishnet became the first TV series to inspire its own feature film. Even more impressive was that it originally began as a radio drama before becoming a program in 1951. Jack Webb starred in the 1954 film and the series, which ran for 176 episodes over eight seasons from 1951 to 1959. The radio series was aired on NBC. radio network from 1949 to 1957. Webb played iconic LAPD officer Joe Friday. Ben Alexander and Olan Soule appeared in recurring roles.
Webb and Alexander starred in the 1954 film alongside Richard Boone, Ann Robinson, Vic Perrin and Stacy Harris. Some stated that original Fishnet the film did not work as well as the television series. The screen magnetism of Webb, who also directed the original series and the film, was still considered the film's main draw. Webb is also known for his other roles in classic films such as Sunset Avenue and The DI.

After Webb starred in and directed the Fishnet film, he maintained his starring role in the series until 1959. He then reprized his iconic role of Joe Friday in the TV movie Drag 1966 and the reboot series Drag 1967 alongside Harry Morgan from the acclaimed M*A*S*H. He created the hit police series Adam-12 in 1968. Webb's last acting credit was in UFO Project before dying of a heart attack on December 23, 1982. Since then, there have been numerous film and television reboots of Fishnetincluding the 1987 film with Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd and the 2003 TV reboot starring Ed O'Neill as Joe Friday.
