Notice! This article contains spoilers for the first season of Cross and the Alex Cross books by James Patterson.Through a scene, Cross the first season surprisingly created a major villain from the book, which made the original twist much worse. Created by Ben Watkins, Amazon Prime Video Cross is based on James Patterson Alex Cruz series of books. While the show accurately adopts many narrative threads and character beats from the original books, it does not strictly follow any story from the source material. Instead, in its first installment, it follows a completely original narrative and attempts to expand the lore of the books rather than recreate it.
Because of this, while it features many familiar characters from James Patterson’s novels, it also adds many new ones to the mix or significantly changes how the books approach some character arcs. For example, although John Sampson avenges the death of Alex Cross’s wife in the books, he only helps Cross subdue his wife’s killers in the series. Likewise, the series also features a significant change for another major character from the book, potentially setting the stage for Cross the big villain of season 2.
Kayla Craig is replacing Alex Cross Books’ main villain, Kyle Craig
The show appears to gender-swap the main villain from the books
Node Alex Cruz books, a character named Kyle Craig is one of the main villains. Like Kayla’s Cross In the first season, he is introduced as an FBI agent, who is initially close friends with Alex Cross and helps him acquire several leads in many of his crime-solving endeavors. Similar to Kayla, Kyle also expects Alex to help him with his own cases. However, after the two shared a mutually beneficial relationship for some time, the books reveal that Kyle is a criminal called “The Mastermind”, who orchestrated many high-profile murders and bank robberies.
One of the books, Double Crossit also shows how he escapes from a maximum security prison. Even the film adaptations of James Patterson’s works, Kiss the girls and Along came a spiderfeature Kyle Craig as the villain (played by Jay O. Sanders). Considering that Kayla shares her last name with Kyle and also appears to have the same opening arc as him in the Amazon Prime Video detective series, it would make sense if the show replaced her with the Kyle from the books.
How Kayla Craig’s encounter with Bobby Trey sets up her big villain twist
Her encounter with Bobby suggests she has ulterior motives
Cross The season 1 finale features a mid-credits scene in which Kayla Craig arranges a secret meeting with Bobby Trey. Knowing he was working with Ed Ramsey, she offers him a deal: he would get full immunity and a 24-month sentence if he agreed to provide evidence of at least six of Ed Ramsey’s murders and plead guilty to the killer’s crimes. When Kayla Craig promises him that Cross will eventually find evidence of the two murders he committed to protect Ed Ramsey, Bobby realizes he has no choice. Therefore, he accepts the deal.
Keeping his best interests in mind, Kayla also asks him to provide her with all the compromising information that Ed Ramsey had about powerful people. She assures him that he will receive a good amount once he gets out of prison if he accepts her offer, which convinces him to shake her hand. With this scene, Cross season 1 seems to establish that although Kayla Craig helped Alex Cross in season 1, She has ulterior motives and could use her newfound information against influential people to create a massive criminal conspiracy in Cross 2nd season.
Kayla Craig’s romance with John will make her villain turn out to be even worse than the books
Kayla could create tension between John and Alex
In the original books, Kyle Craig briefly befriends John Sampson while working with Alex Cross. However, Sampson begins to see him as his enemy after discovering the truth about his crimes. The series appears to take a different approach to John Sampson’s relationship with Kayla Craig. Cross Season 1 hints at some romantic developments between Kayla and John, which could spell trouble for Sampson if she turns out to be a villain in Season 2.

Unlike the books, Sampson would likely be inclined to support Kayla even after Alex Cross starts finding evidence of her crimes. This, in turn, could create tension between the two best friends, causing them to question their trust in each other. It would be interesting to see how else Kayla’s betrayal would impact the titular character in Cross 2nd season.
