Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Smile 2.Smile 2 Writer and director Parker Finn explains the film’s twisted ending and its impact on the future of the new film series. Following Naomi Scott’s pop superstar Skye Riley’s struggle with fame while being haunted by the Smile Entity, the horror sequel ends on a similar note to the original film. However, unlike Rose, who passes the curse on to only one other person, Skye Smile 2 the journey ends on the stage at Madison Square Garden. His death takes place in front of thousands of people, who may or may not be broadcasting the curse to millions more via their smartphones.
Finn explains to Weekly entertainment what Smile 2 ends”exactly where it should“common”moment of meta-feeling.” The director imagined “the most horrible thing“Taking Skye”on stage“when the Sorriso Entity wins, serving as one “comments on the celebrity platform and influence on the public” and a “exploration of the downfall of this pop star who is unable to overcome the things that have been forced upon her.” With future stories, the director hopes to keep telling “intimate and human melodramas“ that are unexpected. Check out what the director said below:
For Skye, what I was chasing was this catharsis of her journey that ends so horribly but ends, for me, exactly where it should. It seemed like the most horrible thing I could do was have her on stage, finally overwhelmed by Smile in front of 20,000 screaming fans. There is a question of whether it is being broadcast live? How big could it be? It felt intoxicating to me. I loved this feeling and power of Smile, and this idea of commenting on a celebrity platform and influencing the public. She’s potentially conveying that and the idea, because of her platform and celebrity, of how many people this can reach.
It was an exploration of the downfall of this pop star who is unable to overcome the things that have been forced upon her. What I love about the end of this film is that I wanted to create this meta-feeling moment, where the audience in the arena looks through the screen at the audience in the theater. I wanted to raise the question: did we do this to Skye? For coming back for a Smile 2, did we do this to her? It’s all intriguing to me, this idea of ”Are we complicit in this?”
We’ll have to see how the audience reacts to Smile 2. I think, in the same way that we jumped off the rails from Smile to Smile 2, if there were more Smile stories to tell in the future, I’d want to make sure I’m doing something that it sounds like, “Holy shit—, I can’t believe this is where Smile is going.” The Smile films are so character-driven; That’s why I wanted to tell these intimate and human melodramas. I wanted to make sure this was included in any future Smile stories as well. There are a lot of interesting directions on where this could go. I’m going to keep quiet about what may or may not happen, but I think it would be very exciting.
What this means for Smile 2 and beyond
The sequel isn’t just a horror movie
In Smile 2, the Entity takes Skye on a very different journey than the one she took with Rose the first time around. Almost all of the events in the film took place in Skye’s head and, as she was a public figure, her death had a much greater impact. Finn’s comment clarifies the deeper meaning behind Skye’s character arc and the hidden message he wanted to tell through the film, being the impact of trauma and fame. The director’s comment also suggests that while fans may think they already know what the next film is about, the events in Smile 2 may not have given much of a clue.
The new film series also appears to have developed its own formula, telling “character-driven” stories focusing on “intimate and human melodramas.” Similar to the first two films, the future Smile installments would focus on one protagonist and delve into their personal journey with the Smile Entity.
Our opinion on the ending of Smile 2
The entity is like a virus
Skye goes through an entire journey trying to find a way to defeat the Smile Entity. However, Smile 2The final twist reveals that the Entity manipulated her perception while leading her to the desired position on the stage in order to spread the curse to thousands of people. The film gives a new look at the Entity’s power and through Skye’s internal struggle it also clarifies how the Entity attacks people in their most painful traumas.
In Smile 2the Entity taunts Skye by making her relive the final moment before the car accident that killed her boyfriend Paul and left her with a scar. Throughout the film, Paul also appears several times with an evil smile. At some point, the Entity takes the form of Skye herself. This development marks a fundamental difference from the first film and, at the same time, indicates that Different people can have completely different symptoms when infected. The Entity behaves like a virus, in a way.
