Warning: MAJOR spoilers ahead for The Diplomat season 2.The Diplomat The first season introduced a major storyline for Rufus Sewell’s Hal Wyler, but the latest series of the Netflix political drama makes absolutely no mention of the pivotal twist. At the end of The Diplomat 2nd season, Hal has apparently completely changed from a remarkable motivation since the show’s first performance. However, the plot point is never openly abandoned on screen. Instead, it’s simply never mentioned in any of the last six episodes. As such, Sewell’s role in The Diplomat The Season 2 cast looks very different than it did at the end The Diplomat season 1.
Hal fluctuated between being a huge thorn in his wife’s side and one of her greatest assets. It’s unlikely that Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler would have achieved some of the things she achieved during her time in London if it weren’t for her charismatic on-again, off-again ex-husband. That said, its uncertain dynamics have also presented more than its share of challenges. Although they appear to be much more of a team at the end of The Diplomat in the second season, there is a major betrayal that was swept under the narrative rug.
The Diplomat Season 2 Forgets Hal’s Secret Campaign to Become Secretary of State
Rufus Sewell’s character silently takes a step back from his previous goal
As an accomplished ambassador in his own right, Hal Wyler’s role in The Diplomat The first season is supposed to mean little more than being the supportive spouse. Although he has some official responsibilities, they are not as predominant as the positions and titles he held in the past. Aware of how restless Hal is and how unpredictable he can act, Kate tries to transfer some of her smaller jobs to her husband. She only realizes too late that Hal is using the platform he was given to launch a campaign to land a much more prominent role.
Kate’s Revelation Happens Deeply The Diplomat season 1, and comes to an abrupt end after the Notting Hill car bomb.
Kate’s Revelation Happens Deeply The Diplomat season 1, and comes to an abrupt end after the Notting Hill car bomb. Hal’s persistence and infinite ambition would certainly allow him to resume his plan to take the position of Secretary of State away from Miguel Gannon as soon as his injuries showed signs of healing. Strangely, the plot doesn’t even get a small mention in The Diplomat 2nd season. While this could mean Kate’s theory was wrong, the presentation of the reveal was too dramatic for it to just be her paranoia.
Why Hal doesn’t continue his campaign in Diplomat Season 2
Hal’s experience with the car bomb at the end of Season 1 appears to have tempered his lofty ambitions
The Diplomat It’s difficult to explain the Season 2 writers choosing to move forward with Hal’s sneaky campaign, but there is a viable theory that refers to Hal’s experience at the end of Season 1. left no mental scars, Hal’s visible discomfort at the Fourth of July fireworks in The Diplomat season 2, episode 3, ‘The Ides of March’ Proves He Has Certain Triggers that bring the fear of that night back to your mind.
Kate being so indulgent of Hal’s implied betrayal and taking advantage of his wife’s position may have made him feel guilty.
Therefore, Hal may simply no longer feel like campaigning for office and finds helping his wife more fulfilling. The fireworks scene also gives Kate and Hal a chance to reconnect, as the love between them is still evident as Kate shows a level of sensitivity to his situation that the show hasn’t yet revealed. Therefore, Kate being so lenient with Hal and Taking advantage of his wife’s post may have made him feel guilty. In that case, it would make sense for him to abandon his previous goal and focus on being an ambassador’s husband.
The Diplomat Season 2 Finale’s Big Twist Makes It Even Less Likely That Hal Will Return to His Plan in Season 3
President Grace Penn Won’t Want Hal Wyler as Secretary of State
Hal’s plan to The Diplomat the first season was looking less and less likely to be picked up the longer season 2 continued. When Michael McKean’s president, Rayburn, dies in the Season 2 finale, “Dreadnought,” if Hal had any ambitions to resume his campaign, it was certainly set aside. Grace Penn, by Allison Janney, being elevated to the position of President of the United States of America is bad news for several characters, but especially for the Wylers.
President Penn is now fully aware that Hal and Kate know of his involvement in the attack on HMS Courageous and, by extension, his connection to the recently executed Roman Lenkov. Even if Grace wanted to replace Gannon and choose a new Secretary of State as part of the The Diplomat In the third season story, the chances of her naming Hal Wyler as her successor are very close to zero – no matter how strong her campaign is.
