Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Ghosts, season 4, episode 3, “Halloween IV: The Witch”
Although Ghosts Season 4’s Halloween special was already packed with exciting incidents, the episode’s ending still left the door open for even more new characters in upcoming episodes. While Ghosts Season 4’s cast of characters included Mary Holland’s Patience in its first introductions, and viewers hopefully didn’t get too attached to this newcomer. The pious Puritan was saved from “THE dirt” where she was trapped under the house in the Season 4 premiere, but she struggled to acclimate to life at Woodstone Manor. This came to light with Ghosts Visit from Frank from season 4.
Sam was desperate for his reunion with his estranged father to work, but Patience was horrified to learn that Frank and his new girlfriend shared a bed before the wedding. She made the walls bleed, forcing Sam and Jay to come up with elaborate excuses to reassure Frank and his girlfriend. Although Sam eventually reconciled with Frank, Season 4 Episode 3, “Halloween IV: The Witch” proved that Ghosts Season 4’s new character, Patience, was still no closer to adapting to the mansion. This results in a shocking last-minute twist that hints at new characters.
Why Patience decides to return for Dirt In Ghosts Season 4 Episode 4
The realities of modern life were too much for the pious Puritan
When Patience initially demanded that the ghosts hold a trial to determine whether Sam was a witch or not, the group agreed as they were angry with Sam and Jay for canceling Halloween. When the group decided that Sam should be a witch, it appeared that Patience somehow turned Sam into a stone statue as punishment. After a dramatic rescue of this statue, which Jay accidentally sold to an online explosives enthusiast, it was revealed that Patience never turned Sam to stone. Patience also shamefully admitted that she watched TV alongside Isaac, despite considering entertainment a mortal sin.
Possibly, Patience announced that she was returning to “The dirt” since the sins of the world above the earth were too much for their puritanical valuesand the rest of the mansion’s residents made no attempt to stop her. Although Isaac Ghosts Season 4’s redemption arc began with him saving Patience from the filth, it became clear by the end of “Halloween IV: The Witch” that she hadn’t successfully adapted to life in the mansion. The ghosts remained afraid of her thanks to her frightening ability to make walls bleed, and this power alienated her from them.
Patience’s departure paves the way for new spirits in Woodstone
Patience mentioned “the others” when leaving
Although she wasn’t popular among the show’s ghosts Patience mentioned ominously that she would return to “The others” upon returning underground. This understandably upset everyone, as the ghosts assumed that Patience was the only ghost trapped on earth. This seemed to directly contradict what she had said in previous episodes about being alone underground, but she may have been trying to make Isaac and Sass feel bad for abandoning her. Regardless of Patience’s confusing history, this comment proves that there may be other ghosts living beneath the mansion that the current cast of characters have not seen.
Ghosts Season 4 may now replace Patience with some of the enigmatic “Others” she referenced in her exit.
Unfortunately, Patience’s tragic catchphrase and her potential as a permanent member of the show’s lineup will not be explored further in Season 4, as “Halloween IV: The Witch” provided the character with a pretty definitive exit. Happily, Ghosts season 4 may now replace Patience with some of the enigmatic “Othersshe referred to as she left. Since Patience didn’t explain what she meant or who she was referring to, this may remain a mystery until the sitcom decides to introduce its next new character.
How More Spirits Could Impact the Story of Sam and Jay’s Woodstone Mansion (and When They Might Appear)
Sam and Jay live in relative harmony with the ghosts for now
New ghosts would have a huge impact on Ghosts season 4as evidenced by Patience’s brief but dramatic role in the series. Although the ghosts constantly seek his attention as well as favors, Sam has a fairly stable relationship with the mansion’s paranormal inhabitants at this stage. Ghosts The third season was the first that focused on both the internal drama of the ghosts and the lives of Sam and Jay, and this was largely because Sam was now on good terms with the ghosts. A new arrival could easily upset this balance of power in Ghosts season 4.

This is part of the reason why Nigel needed to move to Ghosts Season 4 instead of becoming a member of the main cast. Isaac’s love interest was an intriguing and likable character in his own right, but the series’ balance of personalities finally reached equilibrium around season three. Sam was no longer fighting ghosts, struggling to solve Alberta’s murder, or unable to communicate his comments to Jay. Isaac ran the risk of upending that stability if he became a permanent addition. Instead, new ghosts were supposed to be temporary guest stars, like Patience was in the beginning. Ghosts season 4.
