Through Chicago Med In Season 10, Episode 3, Hannah struggled to gain the trust of pregnant patient Eloise, who distrusted her because she had bad experiences with white doctors who dismissed her complaints as a black woman. Unfortunately, Eloise died on the operating table from heavy bleeding just hours after the successful birth. Her death was devastating to Hannah, in part because Hannah had promised Eloise that she would survive life-saving surgery to fix the source of the bleeding.

Hannah’s distress over the loss of this patient was compounded by other events in her life. She had a serious argument with Ripley, who accused her of being a bad person, and she was also facing possible termination from her job as new ED co-leader Caitlin Lenox (Sarah Ramos) questioned her about why the ED needed a full-time OB/GYN . These stressors, combined with her guilt and self-blame for leaving Eloise’s baby motherless, led to Hannah breaking down in the operating room after other medical professionals convinced her to stop trying to resuscitate Eloise.

Hannah’s rough start to Chicago Med Season 10 could lead to a relapse

Her guilt over Eloise’s death could have been the last straw for her.

There had previously been occasions when Hannah had experienced severe stress without turning to drugs, and on one occasion she was offended by the suggestion that she might relapse. However, these were instances where she was dealing with an isolated stressor, such as a passionate disagreement with Archer over patient care. In this case, Hannah is dealing with multiple sources of stress, all of which are painful. Moreover, her feelings about Heloise’s death include guilt and self-blame, both of which are strong emotions from which people often seek refuge.

Connected

Hannah’s emotions ran high both before and after Eloise’s death. Although Eloise didn’t trust Hannah at first, they later became close and Eloise revealed that she and her husband had hoped to have a large family, but were now resigned to the fact that this child would be their only child. During this conversation, Eloise asked Hannah if Hannah wanted children; Hannah’s answer that she didn’t do it in the past because she made bad choices could have been foreshadowing about her potential relapse.

Hannah might turn to drugs to ease her guilt over Eloise’s death, especially given all the other stressors she’s facing.

Now that they had grown closer, Hannah found it harder to cope with Eloise’s death. Additionally, Eloise’s husband thanked Hannah for helping save their baby, which no doubt made Hannah feel even worse about not being able to save her wife on the operating table. She also carries the guilt of leaving baby Ruby motherless and breaking her promise that Eloise would wake up from surgery and see her baby girl again. So Hannah might turn to drugs to ease her guilt over Eloise’s death, especially given all the other stressors she’s facing.
