Farmiga’s tribute to Wilson signals that this is truly the end of an era for The Conjuring Universe. However, Doesn’t necessarily mean the franchise is ending. While there have been no follow-ups officially announced, there are more projects in development based on the cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, including a Max series set after the events of the films that were announced in April 2023. It’s also possible that more Annabelle and The nun sequels could grace the screen.

It’s also possible that Ed and Lorraine Warren will return in some capacity in these possible future projects. They appeared in many of the other spin-off films, whether through footage or new scenes. Even if one or both of them die in Last Ritesthe fact that most spinoffs were prequels it could allow ample opportunities in the universe to appear.

Ed and Lorraine Warren’s story may actually be over

Although The Conjuration: Last Rites may not end up being Ed and Lorraine Warren’s last appearance on Conjuring movies, for now, it seems like Farmiga is seeing this film as a victory lap for the characters. While her heartfelt post seems to indicate she’s not ready to leave the Warrens behind, her appreciation for the characters may extend to the point of she may not want to unnecessarily extend her on-screen appearances if they are given a satisfying ending in the new film.
