Dain is a perfect candidate to die onyx storm, since he’s a big enough character that his death has an emotional impact on Violet – but he’s not so important that he has plot armor. In fact, you could argue that Dain has already done almost everything he needed to do in The Empyrean Series’ main story. He unwittingly uses his powers to take Xaden and the Marked Ones to Athebyne, where they are attacked by poison. He also tries to make up for this betrayal by saving Violet in Iron Flame.

Dain’s power was used for good and evil, and following similar beats later Empyrean Series books would seem repetitive. It’s possible that Dain’s signet could be used in some way for the war effort, but that might not be important enough to prolong his arc. There are only two important things Dain still needs to do in the future Fourth Wing books, and they could easily happen in Onyx storm. This can happen during onyx storm, although, as there’s little need for Dain’s redemption to last another three books. And Violet’s hesitation to forgive Dain could be directly linked to his death. Perhaps his final act of redemption is to die saving Violet or even Xaden. This would increase the emotional impact of his death, assuming this popular theory comes true. And Dain’s death also makes sense symbolically, as it represents Violet’s previous life.

Dain is a representative of Violet’s former life in The Empyrean Series, while the two grew up together and learned the same lies about Navarre. Dain and Violet seem to be on the same page when Fourth Wing begins, but Dain can’t see his childhood friend as anything more than that. Her doubts about Violet drive her away, and when Violet finds out more about Navarre, Dain is left behind.
