While the adaptation of the hit musical is best known for its fun sequences featuring ABBA’s biggest hits, there are plenty of great Mom Mia! quotes that highlight the romance, comedy, and fun of the film and its sequel. The 2008 big-screen adaptation brings together a star-studded cast that includes Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, to name just a few. It tells the story of young Sophie (Seyfried) who invites three of her mother’s ex-lovers to her wedding to find out who her real father is.
The premise is a perfect setting for funny antics and conversations about past romances. Adding ABBA music, and Mom Mia! became a huge success. Its 2018 sequel, Mom Mia! here we go againThe fun continues as Sophie’s story continues, while also reminiscing about Donna’s youthful adventures. The film is filled with hilarious one-liners, touching reflections of love, and a showcase of the actors having fun.

“Dot Dot Dot. That’s what they did.”
Sophie (Amanda Seyfried)
Mom Mia! It wastes little time getting the story moving in the first film, when Sophie’s best friends arrive for her Greek island wedding and she immediately informs them of her plan to invite her prospective parents. Sophie explains that she learned about their identities from Donna’s old diary, in which she described affairs with these men but spared the details with well-placed ellipses..
It’s a charming detail that Donna was too shy to write in her diary about what really happened between her and these men, even though she clearly had a fun and wild side. The way Sophie deciphers the code and suggests it comes from “ancient times” adds to the charm of the moment. This becomes even more fun when the sequel/prequel explores Donna’s connections as part of the story.

“I feel like there’s a part of me missing, and when I meet my dad, everything will fall into place.”
Sophie (Amanda Seyfried)
While acting legend Meryl Streep steals many scenes with her fun and committed performance as Donna, Amanda Seyfried is truly the heart of the film as Sophie. She is a likable protagonist whose plan can create a lot of chaos in the film, but this brief moment of her explaining her desire to meet her real father makes it clear why she’s willing to go through all of this.
Mom Mia! It’s basically the story of Sophie finding herself. Although she thinks it is not knowing her father that causes her this sense of loss, at the end of the film she has to confront what she wants for herself. This quote highlights the beginning of this journey as she seeks to understand what she is missing.

“Great role models you two are for Sophie! A serial bride and a little hermit here!”
Donna (Meryl Streep)
Tanya (Christine Baranski) and Rosie (Julie Walters) are excellent comedic characters in both films. The first film presents them as a dynamic duo with very different lifestyles but similar senses of fun and adventure when they arrive on the island as Donna’s best friends. However, When it comes to his influence on Sophie, Donna is less than impressed.
The little line goes a long way toward establishing Tanya and Rosie as characters. This shows that they are important people in Donna’s life and are polar opposites when it comes to relationships. Tanya has had many failed marriages, while Rosie doesn’t seem interested in romance. However, the phrase actually contains a poignant sentiment when looking at the second film. While Donna jokes about her friends being role models for her daughter, when she leaves in the aftermath, Tanya and Rosie step into the role of Sophie’s support system.

“Nothing works around here except me.”
Donna (Meryl Streep)
Much like Sophie, Donna quickly establishes herself as a main character that the audience can easily care for. This is not just because Meryl Streep plays the role, but also because she is a strong, independent woman who still wouldn’t mind finding love and settling down at some point in her life. When she shows Tanya and Rosie the hotel, Donna makes a joke about all the hard work she’s putting in to get the old hotel up and running.
The phrase is captivating for Donna, as it shows the determination and strength she has as a character. The lifestyle she has is difficult, and although she may complain at times, that doesn’t mean she will work any less to make sure everything is done right. This also gives her a funny advantage, as she has little patience for people who get in her way of getting things done.

“It’s one of those serendipitous moments in life when three complete strangers share a common thought.”
Bill (Stellan Skarsgard)
Mom Mia!Annie’s songs contribute to the film’s fun sequences, but the way the story leans into the sitcom premise is oddly charming. There are endless misunderstandings and kept secrets that fuel the film’s savagery as it progresses. This begins immediately after the three potential fathers – Harry (Colin Firth), Bill (Stellan Skarsgård) and Sam (Pierce Brosnan) – arrive on the island and Sophie makes them promise not to tell Donna why they are there.
As Donna finds her ex-lovers and questions why they came, they offer flimsy and unconvincing excuses about everyone being there for different reasons. Bill adds to this by further highlighting how unlikely the scenario is. While these antics may be a little ridiculous for some audiences, those who can get on board with this type of storytelling will enjoy it.

“How could you, I don’t know which one it is.”
Donna (Meryl Streep)
The wedding scene at the end of Mom Mia! It’s a perfect climax to the film as it shows all the secrets and misunderstandings coming crashing down. It starts with Donna interrupting the nuptials to announce to Sophie and the congregation of guests that her real father is in attendance. However, When Sophie admits that she already knows, the confusion increases, as Donna doesn’t even know which of the men is the real father..
It’s a laugh-out-loud moment that completely takes the breath away from what Donna considers a big reveal. The fact that she has to admit, after making the announcement about Sophie’s father being present, that she doesn’t know who the real one is, is made even funnier by Meryl Streep’s confused reaction. The way the three “parents” stand up proudly when Donna makes the announcement, only to slowly sit down when the confusion continues is a great touch.

“And I haven’t slept with hundreds of men.”
Donna (Meryl Streep)
The confusion of the wedding scene leads to a beautiful moment between Sophie and Donna as they both apologize to each other. Sophie tells her mother that she regrets lying to her and bringing the three men to the island behind her back. In turn, Donna apologizes for not knowing who Sophie’s real father is. However, Sophie assures her mother that she doesn’t mind sleeping with hundreds of men because she is still an amazing mother.
The sweet moment is given a touch of humor as Donna feels the need to tell the people present and the priest that she has actually slept with hundreds of men.. Meryl Streep has earned a reputation as one of the greatest actresses of all time thanks to some intense and dramatic roles, but it’s so much fun to see her embracing humor in a role like this.

“I just wanted to say it’s great to have at least a third of Sophie.”
Harry (Colin Firth)
Despite the mystery of Sophie’s father being at the center of the entire first film, Mom Mia! is not very interested in providing an answer to that question in the end. The three men go to the wedding thinking they are the father and that will give her away. When it becomes clear that the truth about Sophie’s father is not known, the men don’t do it selfishly. Instead of, Harry expresses the feeling that is shared by them all.
Without the big reveal, the three men are more than willing to share the title of Sophie’s father. Even with the mystery unanswered, it’s a touching moment that makes it worth it. This shows how much the men care about Sophie, and this is further cemented in the sequel, as they all still share work together.
7
“Typical, isn’t it? You wait 20 years for a father and then three appear at the same time.”
Rosie (Julie Walters)
Part of the reason Mom Mia! If it gets away with its more bizarre storytelling moments, it’s because it never takes itself too seriously. Even in emotional moments, the characters can comment on the absurdity of it all and make the film easy to enjoy, with pure fun and lightness. In the scene where the three parents agree to share parenting of Sophie, Rosie makes this snide comment to Tanya.
It’s a funny moment with Julie Walters telling it as if this bizarre situation is something that happens every day. Yet the line is also a poignant reminder of what’s at the heart of the story. Sophie wished she had a father for years, and although she was stressed about finding out the truth about which man her father was, in the end, she managed to have three loving parents to call her own.
6
“Why waste a good marriage?”
Sam (Pierce Brosnan)
When the audience arrives at the climactic wedding in Mom Mia! they either agree with its silly, fun tone or think it’s ridiculous. This is further cemented by the way Sam and Donna’s complicated love story unfolds. When Sophie and Sky decide they don’t need to get married to be happy together, Sam decides this is the perfect opportunity to make up for lost time he and Donna had years ago..
The suddenness of the proposal is hilariously over the top and it’s as if Sam is just making this spontaneous decision. It gets even funnier with his convincing final line to Donna: “It’s just the rest of your life.” The fact that the sequence cements Donna’s love for being spontaneous makes it seem like this is exactly the kind of proposal and marriage she would want.
5
“Are flamingos wise?”
Tanya (Christine Baranski)
Although Meryl Streep will not return to Mom Mia! 2 in the lead role, the sequel brings some fun new cast members. One of the most memorable of the new cast is Andy García as Señor Cienfuegos. He is a deeply romantic and poetic hotel manager and immediately wins Tanya and Rosie’s hearts with these compliments. However, the film has some fun with the character as he suggests that Rosie has the wisdom of a flamingo, only for Tanya to question how accurate that is.
García relies on the character’s charm, as well as the exaggerated nature of his way with women. While Tanya takes a moment to question whether what he’s saying actually makes sense, the way Rosie swoons at the compliment proves that it doesn’t really matter what he’s saying, but rather how he’s saying it.
4
“Not yet.”
Sam (Pierce Brosnan)
Donna’s death between the first and second films is a problem for Mom Mia! 3but it adds an interesting new emotional element to the story. While Sophie spends the film trying to honor her mother’s memory, Sam is still trying to deal with the loss of the love of his life. In a touching moment, Sophie and Sam remember Donna with Sophie reassuring her that everything will get better. Although Sam agrees, he admits he’s still not better.
It’s a touching moment with Pierce Brosnan delivering the line with a profound sadness that touches. It would have been nice to see more of Sam and Donna’s relationship later in life, but the sequel’s flashbacks show the connection these two had from the beginning and it makes it a bittersweet story to know the love they had and the love that was. lost.
3
“It’s not easy being a mother. If it were, parents would do it.”
Young Donna (Lily James)
While Mom Mia! 2 maintains the same fun energy as the first film, there is also an underlying emotional connection between young Donna’s story and that of her daughter Sophie in the present day. During one of the flashbacks, Donna is in Greece, where she meets Sofia, the woman who would eventually name her daughter. She comments on the great job Sofia has done as a mother and makes this funny but insightful observation about motherhood.
The quote is particularly clever for the Mom Mia! franchise. While the first film is about Sophie trying to find her father, the sequel is about her relationship with her mother. Although her three parents are important figures in her life, once the relationship was established, Donna worked hard and gave everything she could to be a good mother.
2
“You have to improve your breathing and you were a little irritated.”
Ruby (Cher)
There are some inconsistencies between Mom Mia! and Mom Mia! 2including the fact that Donna’s mother is mentioned as dead in the first film, only to appear in the second film with no mention of her supposed death. However, this plot hole can be ignored given the fact that Cher takes on the role of Donna’s mother, Ruby. Given the tough reputation she had in the first film, it’s surprising that Ruby shows up and is ready to be a supportive grandmother.
However, Cher is very amused by the fact that Ruby is not used to being supportive. After Sophie delivers a heartfelt musical tribute to her mother, Ruby immediately criticizes her singing. It’s a hilarious moment because instead of being cruel, it feels like Ruby was forced to say something rude. Amanda Seyfried’s unimpressed reaction makes it even funnier.
1
“I told many, many people.”
Harry (Colin Firth)
Given that secrets were such a big part of the first film, it makes sense that there would be a big secret to keep in the sequel. However, it is something that does not remain a secret for long. During the climax, Sophie discovers she is pregnant and happily tells Sky. However, word quickly spreads through the party and they try to find out what is going on. Sophie reveals that she only told Sam, who only told Bill, who only told Harry. However, Harry then openly admits that he told everyone.
Colin Firth’s speech makes the moment hilarious. Considering all the misunderstandings and secrets they’ve become accustomed to, it’s pretty amusing that Harry decided to share the news with everyone he can. He doesn’t even seem embarrassed to admit it, which is actually a sweet sign of how happy he is to be a grandfather.
