Garfield is a beloved comic that continues to stand the test of time. not only because of the widespread fame and recognition of the titular orange cat, but also because of all the characters that make up Garfield franchise. While Garfield is clearly the standout, characters like Jon and Odie are also great reasons to read the comic, especially Odie, who may have been hiding a secret all along.
Odie was introduced as Lyman’s dog when he briefly moved in with Jon, but after Lyman’s mysterious disappearance (don’t look in Jon’s basement), Odie became Jon’s dog – much to Garfield’s dismay. From then on, Garfield constantly bullied Odie, and the seemingly stupid dog fell for all of Garfield’s cruel pranks. However, in comic book collection published in September 1984.there’s one that indicates that Odie isn’t “dumb” at all, but is secretly smart – and that’s far from the only noteworthy streak in this group. Of all, these are the 10 funniest Garfield comics that just turned 40!

Garfield is not the open-minded confidant Jon hoped for
Garfield – September 12, 1984
Jon sits in his chair with Garfield curled up behind his head and he tells himself how grateful he is that he has pets that he can trust because they never make judgments. Jon then admits that he got a speeding ticket, and when Garfield overhears this, he hits Jon in the back of the head.calling him stupid. Obviously, Garfield isn’t the open-minded confidante Jon was hoping for in a pet, but maybe he’s something better.
In other words, Garfield was being a true friend, calling Jon stupid for speeding.
Garfield wasn’t going to just let Jon think it was okay for him to speed as it was dangerous as it (in the worst case scenario) could cost him his life. In other words, Garfield was being a true friend, calling Jon stupid for speeding. So, while he may not be impartial, Garfield is still a great companion for Jon.

Garfield suffers the consequences of an ancient saying
Garfield – September 14, 1984
Garfield decides that he is going to open his own can of cat food rather than wait for Jon to do it, muttering the old saying:There are several ways to skin a cat.But then the electric can opener malfunctions, and Garfield is caught in the grip of the spinning blades. Garfield is literally being “skinned” (more like shaving)before telling yourself: “How prophetic“.
Connected
When Garfield said: “There are several ways to skin a cat.“, he talked about how there are several ways to get food. Usually he waits for John, but another way is to just get it himself. Unfortunately, Garfield literally suffers the consequences of this ancient proverb. in the most fun way.

Garfield gives another reason why he needs to lose weight
Garfield – September 17, 1984
While Jon sits in his chair, Garfield happily runs up to him, intending to curl up on his lap. When Garfield jumps onto a chair, he can’t get past the armrest. The fat orange cat grabbed onto the chair, but his weight was too much for the armrest to support and he leaned back, prompting Jon to tell Garfield that he needed to go on a diet.
Not only that Garfield is too out of shape to fully jump onto a chair.but his weight literally broke the armrest when he tried to climb onto it. Jon has threatened to put Garfield on a diet many times throughout the comic, and now another reason is added to that list with this completely pathetic and unintentionally destructive display.

Jon gets too involved in Garfield’s personal life and suffers the consequences
Garfield – September 23, 1984

So Garfield shows him. One by one Garfield talks about all the little treasures he has collected over the years.until he finally gets to the last one, “bed stuffed with beans“, which he immediately demonstrates on John himself, hitting him on the back of the head.
Garfield was no longer in the best mood after Jon woke him up. for seemingly no reason, so when Jon started prying into Garfield’s personal life, the orange cat happily showed him what a huge mistake he had just made.

Garfield has finally found a Monday he likes.
Garfield – September 24, 1984
When Garfield wakes up and notices that it’s Monday, readers might have assumed that this comic would be another “Garfield Loses a Joke.” However, Garfield then notes that it is raining, that his favorite food is in front of him, and that a song he loves is playing on the radio. In other words, Garfield is having a very pleasant day, even though today is Monday..
Garfield famously hates Mondays (and Mondays don’t like him too much either), so it’s truly a rare occasion where Garfield actually finds a Monday he likes – and this comic delivers just that.

Garfield won’t tolerate Jon’s lies when it comes to his food.
Garfield – September 29, 1984
It is a well-known fact that Garfield’s favorite food is lasagna.however, throughout the comic, Garfield constantly eats regular cat food. It’s hard to imagine that someone who loves a dish like lasagna (and a lot more “people food”) would be able to digest regular cat food on a daily basis. Well, it turns out Garfield can’t, and he tries to get his point across to Jon by making him eat cat food and see how much he likes it.

Jon plays a prank on Garfield by pretending to like cat food just to keep the orange cat from completely refusing to eat it.. However, Garfield sees through Jon’s lies and tells him so in an indictment.”You’re lying!“, and it’s honestly a very cute panel, even if it wasn’t enough to get Garfield to eat cat food every day.

Garfield suffers a fate that is irony at its best.
Garfield – September 26, 1984
It’s no secret that Garfield loves to eat, and although he doesn’t like cat food, he still takes off the plate like it’s nothing. However, not once in a hundred years did Garfield think that food could do the same to him. But this comic proves him wrong. When Garfield goes into town with a bowl of cat food, he finds himself sitting in the food he is eating and slowly begins to sink into it.
Garfield notes that he just got caught”fast food“, a play about “quicksand”and that this seems to be the end for him. Garfield apparently meets his end by being eaten by his food, which is simply ironic at its best considering Garfield’s gluttonous nature throughout his comic book history.
3
John never has a moment’s peace (not even in the bath)
Garfield – September 16, 1984
When John tries to take some time for himself by taking a bath, but quickly realizes that this is impossible.. First, Garfield comes into the bathroom and says that his rubber chicken, Stretch, needs a bath too. Odie then joins them with a giant cannonball splash. After this, John receives a package for which he needs to sign, and the courier asks for John’s signature through the bathroom window.
The paperboy then throws a rolled-up newspaper directly at John’s head, causing John to go crazy and attracting the attention of his elderly neighbors (who were too excited about it). John lives in a house with two needy pets and in a neighborhood that always seems to be bustling, meaning… just a moment of peace is simply impossible – not even for the bath.

Garfield tries to console Jon with another potentially upsetting idea.
Garfield – September 1, 1984
When Garfield and Jon stop by Jon’s family farm and hang out away from everyone on the wooden fence outside the house, Jon confesses some of the worries his family has brought to the forefront of his thoughts. John says his grandfather was bald, his father is bald and his older brother is bald. Therefore, John himself is worried that he will eventually go bald. However, Garfield decides to ease his worries as only Garfield can by telling him:You were probably adopted“.
Finding out that someone was adopted as an adult can be extremely upsetting, especially if they have been kept in the dark about it their entire life. But in Garfield’s mind, Jon experiencing this potentially upsetting idea is preferable to the worry he felt about going bald, which is kind of nice but also mean-spirited (classic Garfield).

However, when Odie, Garfield and Jon go on a hike together.Odie proves to everyone how wrong they really were about him.

Audie was in the car with all the supplies and was the only one with food and shelter.while Jon and Garfield were left hungry and wet near the car.

Odie didn’t have to share food during the hike, and he had the opportunity to pull a legendary prank on Jon and Garfield. And the best part? No one even thought Odie was capable of anything until he proved that he was secretly smart. That’s why it’s one of the 10 best Garfield comics that just turned 40!
