The 10 Best Farscape Characters, Ranked

All four seasons of Distant landscape are full of colorful and attractive characters, but certain figures stand out among the rest in the vast fictional universe. Running between 1999 and 2003, Distant landscape was one of the most underrated sci-fi shows, but it's still championed by its devoted fan base. Distant landscape put a new spin on overused sci-fi tropes while staying true to its space opera label. While there are several reasons why the show is so entertaining, the chemistry that exists between the various members of the Distant landscape The cast is one of the biggest factors.

Distant landscape revolves around Ben Browder's John Crichton, an astronaut who was launched into a distant part of space and became trapped there. The show chronicles Crichton's attempts to return to Earthbut the task is often shelved in favor of trying to survive alongside her new family. The show is a co-production between several studios, one of which is The Jim Henson Company - an organization best known for its work on Dolls franchise. As such, Distant landscape features several characters played by impressive puppets, which adds a unique touch to the show.

Distant landscape is so densely populated that naming the top 10 characters becomes a herculean task. So there are some important players who can't get through. For example, while it's impossible to deny how fascinating the concept of a living ship is, Moya's characterization has always been limited by her restrictive communication skills. Therefore, the show's main Leviathan is not ranked here. Likewise, Paul Goddard's Stark was a great character, but there were others with a similar archetype – and they did it better.

Talyn

Moya's son has a very interesting origin and arc

Although Moya is not on the top 10 list Distant landscape characters, her son offers something extra that makes him fascinating enough to put him ahead of his mother. As a Leviathan/Peacemaker hybrid, Tayln possesses all of the strengths of both origins, with none of the weaknesses. From a purely canon aspect, he's a brilliantly designed character, and his Peacekeeper aesthetic gives him an even greater advantage. However, Talyn also displays a surprising personality for a ship.

Just like a traditional child, Tayln often disregards authority and often thinks she knows more than her mother. Being so stubborn puts Tayln in great danger, but his unique abilities are almost always enough to get him out of whatever trouble he finds himself in. Much like his eventual captain/pilot, Bialar Crais of Lani Tupu, Talyn's loyalties change quite frequently. Although Tayln never truly becomes a villain, his loyalty to Crais starts to make things difficult at some pointsleading to great stories. Their shared fate cements a bittersweet final redemption.

Bialar Crais

Played by: Lani Tupu

Crais and Talyn eventually begin to form a pair, and Tupu's character becomes an uneasy ally to Moya and her crew. What separates Crais from his ship is that the captain begins Distant landscape as the main antagonist of the story. Watching the Peacekeeper gradually transform from a self-assured leader into an obsessive wreck as he feverishly tries to track down John Crichton is one of the show's best performances.

Unfortunately, Crais loses some points for becoming a more predictable character. After stealing Moya's baby at the end of Distant landscape In the first season, Crais becomes much easier to read - for the most part. There are still moments that take the audience by surprise, but they never regain the same interest as before the defection. Crais is still a very good character, but he is a victim of his past stories.

8

Chiana

Played by: Gigi Edgley

Like several other members of Moya's crew, Chiana went down in history as a prisoner. Unlike the others, she was being held captive by her own people, which immediately made her a very interesting character. After being freed by Crichton and the others Edgley's character quickly integrated herself among her new allies - the group that would eventually become his closest friends. Watching her journey from a skittish loner to a team player is incredibly rewarding, and her arc is expertly written.

Distant landscapeThe alien characters stand out from their counterparts in many other science fiction shows. Not only do they look fantastic, but often their general mannerisms and behaviors are not recognizably of this Earth. Gigi Edgley's performance as Chiana is one of the best examples of Distant landscapeThe illusion of real alien life. Everything from the way she moves her body to how she delivers her lines screams science fiction, selling the lie perfectly.

7

Ka D'Argo

Played by: Anthony Simcoe

Moya's resident Luxan does his kind proud by also being the ship's fiercest warrior. As the program's response to Star TrekOf the Klingons, the Luxans live for the thrill of battle, but D'Argo's species ends up being a bit more subtle than their cross-franchise counterparts. On the surface, Simcoe's character is all aggression and bravado, but after getting to know him a little, one discovers that he has an immense capacity for loyalty, friendship and love.

Simcoe's character race is one of the most developed of all time. Distant landscapeand all this lore helps contextualize his character even more than episode by episode.

Besides looking great and being an interesting character in his own right, D'Argo teaches the audience and his crewmates a lot about the Luxan species. Simcoe's character race is one of the most developed of all time. Distant landscapeand all this lore helps contextualize his character even more than episode by episode. As an added bonus, his Qualta Blade is really cool.

6

Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan

Played by: Virginia Hey

With all the chaos, violence, strangeness and jokes that give Distant landscape its distinctive appeal, it can be easy to get lost in it all. Zhaan is the port in the midst of the storm, not just for those aboard the Moyabut also for those who watch the show. She is the spiritual leader aboard the ship and also the closest thing they have to a doctor. She is very trustworthy for medical care and general advice, but asks for nothing in return.

Zhaan's experience as a Delvian priest is what gives him such peace of mind and a general aversion to violence, but Distant landscapeBuilding the world around your character doesn’t end there. It is eventually revealed near the end of Distant landscape 1st season that Hey's character is a plant-based life form. Such a development not only improves Zhaan as a figure of interest, but also the entire show and its associated lore.

5

Aeryn Sol

Played by: Cláudia Black

Aeryn's forced defection from the Peacekeepers is what starts her Distant landscape bowand allows her character to change and grow a lot throughout the show. Although she remains resistant to her new life for a long time, her self-preservation instincts allow for a gradual and very rewarding story of redemption. Far from her own kind, she is almost a counterpart to Crichton, although she has much more experience with the space around her. Regardless, her outward appearance looking so human basically makes her Distant landscapesecondary protagonist - but someone who actually knows what she's doing.

Despite accepting its post-Peacemaker existence, Distant landscape does a great job of maintaining Black's character's silent desire to return to the organization that has served as her home for so long.

Although she never fully abandons the directness that comes with being a soldier raised from birth, Aeryn finds new ways to channel the energy she once spent exclusively on killing her targets.. Despite accepting its post-Peacemaker existence, Distant landscape does a great job of maintaining Black's character's silent desire to return to the organization that has served as her home for so long. Watching her two sides constantly conflict is where most of her appeal comes from, but she has other incredible traits as well.

4

Rygel VXI Dominator

Played by: Jonathan Hardy

Like an exiled emperor, Rygel somehow maintains a shocking amount of pomp and circumstance. Along with his prominent materialism, he demonstrates on several occasions his propensity for selfishness. Everything should always be about Rygel as far as he is concerned, and he rarely makes any kind of effort to put others first. Despite technically being one of the heroes of Distant landscapeit would also be very easy to frequently interpret her actions and personality as villainous.

While all of these negative characteristics may make it seem confusing that it is ranked as one of the best Distant landscape characters, it's its wildcard status that makes it so good. It's almost impossible to say when Rygel will try to betray his teammatesand it's even more unexpected on the rare occasions when he has a fit of altruism and chooses to put himself at risk for everyone else. Without Rygel, Moya's entire crew would constantly be on the same side, which would quickly get boring.

3

Scorpio

Played by: Wayne Pygram

Wayne Pygram Distant landscape The antagonist is easily one of the most underrated sci-fi villains of all time. Everything from how he looks, to how he behaves, and even how he speaks makes him a truly terrifying opponent for Crichton and the others. As the only Scarran/Sebacean hybrid in the series, its lineage is not only unique, but the story behind how he came to be is one of the darker facets of Scorpius' character. Just as it looks like it's about to become predictable, he does or says something that confirms it's a bottomless pit of surprises.

The Scorpius copy, which Crichton treats as "Harvey," is essentially identical to the original character, but understandably changes due to the unconventional setting.

Pygram also has the unusual opportunity to play two versions of Scorpius. There is, of course, the “real” version, and then there is the iteration that takes up residence solely in Crichton’s mind. The Scorpius copy, which Crichton treats as "Harvey," is essentially identical to the original character, but understandably changes due to the unconventional environment. So, the Distant landscape villain can be witnessed in two very different environmentsand it all adds to the character's compelling legend.

2

John Crichton

Played by: Ben Browder

Crichton is the public's eyes and earsso her confused reactions and her sort of learning-on-the-job arc are incredibly relatable. Everything Crichton is seeing for the first time, so is the audience, and it helps build a solid kinship between Browder's characters. Distant landscape character and spectators. Although this type of character is not especially original to Distant landscapethe show does this much better than many of its predecessors, contemporaries, and even many of its successors.

Browder's versatile performances as Crichton allow the character to maintain his jokester personality, often even as he faces the barrel of certain destruction.

Browder's versatile performances as Crichton allow the character to maintain his jokester personality, often even as he faces the barrel of certain destruction. However, Distant landscapeThe human protagonist also experiences several emotional and heartfelt stories with various members of his crew. He is highly adaptable to whoever he is paired with. With D'Argo, Crichton always presents himself as a brave warrior. With Zhaan, Browder's character is not beyond falling into a spiritual mindset. It is this flexible nature that makes him so brilliant, in addition to his own core values.

1

Pilot

Played by: Lani Tupu

Moya pilot in Farscape

Moya's extraterrestrial helmsman is truly fascinating. Not only is he by far the most alien-looking character in Distant landscapebut his backstory, like the history of the rest of his species, is incredibly compelling. Choosing to be bonded for life to a sentient vessel rooted in a single chamber shows a genuine desire to explore the galaxy, but the sacrifice made by Pilot also benefits the rest of Moya's crew. The pilot also voiced by Lani Tupu makes the Crais actor's role even more poignant as he plays the pilot for Moya and his son.

Pilot spends his existence not only in relative solitude, but also in the service of others. He has his dark stripes, like almost all the others Distant landscape character, but his impeccable track record only makes these indiscretions stand out that much more and warrant further examination of his personality. Without a pilot, Distant landscape it would still be good, but its presence is what pushes space opera into the realm of underrated greats.
