Thomas Doherty teases his character’s romance with Lucy in Tell Me Lies Season 2
“He has the romantic relationship with Lucy, but obviously, he’s a new character, and he’s new to the toxicity of this group of people.”
Screen Rant: Branden, I’m going to start with you because we have to talk about the giant twist at the end of the finale. Evan hooks up with Lucy while he was with Bree. What can you tease about how this secret will affect him and his relationships in season 2?
Branden Cook: I think Evan is going to be very stressed this season, and I think he’s going to figure out how to deal with it. We will have to see how he deals with it, but he will be very stressed this season.
Wrigley and Pippa had a falling out at the end of season 1, and it’s hard to watch because there’s obvious love between them. What is their dynamic going forward?
Spencer House: I think it’s more interesting to see. We had a lot of scenes together in season 2, and I think in season 1 they had an idea of who they were, but had a front up the whole time. They have to be more open with each other, and I think they see each other for the first time a little bit in season 2, if that makes sense.
Thomas, we know from the season 2 trailer that your character will have a romance with Lucy. What can you share about the dynamic and the role that Leo will play in this very complex web of lies?
Thomas Doherty: Yes, he does. He has the romantic relationship with Lucy, but obviously, he’s a new character, and he’s new to the toxicity of this group of people. Together with his own efforts to become a better person, together with Stephen lingered constantly in the background, physically and in the background of Lucy’s mind. It gets very noisy with her struggles with what Stephen did to her.
Wrigley is struggling to cope after the Season 1 finale “Tell Me Lies”.
“I think his whole identity was the popular football star, and that got swept out from under him.”
Evan goes off a bit in season 1. He says that none of the characters are actually his friends. I’m curious if you feel it’s just something he said in a moment of anger, or are these real beliefs that will continue to present themselves as the show goes on?
Branden Cook: That’s a great question. I think people get caught up in the moment, and I think sometimes the truth comes out, but I think it comes out before you’re ready to tell it, and you’re ready to deal with it. And I think what happens is that Evan is figuring out how to deal with it and how to deal with the emotions that he feels, but he probably doesn’t articulate well and doesn’t know what to do with those emotions.
Spencer, we have to get back to Wrigley because he’s going through it. He had a pretty bad injury at the end of last season that kept him off the football team. How is he doing? What can you share about his future plans?
Spencer House: Yes, he fell off a house. He deals with things with his brother, this is also a big deal. But I think when it comes to the broken leg, I think his whole identity was the popular football star, and that was swept out from under him, and it will be interesting to see how he deals with that. He doesn’t deal with it, but it will be fun.
Thomas, there are always changes from script to screen, and with this being a new character, how do you feel your Leo has evolved since you started filming?
Thomas Doherty: Meaghan and Victoria and the other writers are very good. It’s definitely there. It was a fleshed-out character. Meaghan is such a wonderful showrunner. She is not against an actor bringing their own thing. I talk about my own past and how it relates to Leo and try to incorporate that into the character. At times it felt very cathartic because there are so many similarities between us. It was just a really well-written character.
