Warning: Contains spoilers for Tama #1! Imagine if all these abandoned digital Tamagotchi Pets wanted revenge against their human owners, and had the means to enact that revenge a la la Five Nights at Freddy’s. Well, lucky for horror fans, they don’t have to, because a whole new series called TAMA is doing it for them. This upcoming comic features murderous virtual creatures breaking into the physical world, and only one child has the power to stop them.
Shared by AIPT ComicsPANICK Entertainment released a first look at one of the publisher’s first-ever comic book titles, TAMA #1 by Adam Schlagman, Doug Pasko and Daniel HDR. Included in this first look was a detailed description of the six-issue miniseries, as well as gruesome artwork that proves why these digital monsters are so utterly terrifying.
In this horrific world, there exists a virtual pet platform called Companimals. When one downloads the game onto their device, their companion automatically integrates with each track of their virtual track. Every app, social media platform, and even other games can be infiltrated by their companion, making them a true virtual pet that is literally everywhere they are. When this becomes a major problem, however, is when the companion animals transcend the virtual world and break into the physical, and when they do so, they are completely invisible to the naked eye.
Tama’s Story has been described as ‘child’s play’ meets ‘Pokemon’
As revealed in PANICK Entertainment’s release, the story of TAMA It begins with a 14-year-old boy named Keith, whose life was full of trauma and tragedy. Keith’s father has recently died, his mother is abandoning him (throwing herself into work to deal with her own trauma), and he is being bullied at school. So, Keith downloads Companions to have his own virtual pet to help him through the tough times – and his pet’s name is TAMA.
Keith loves TAMA, and TAMA loves Keith back. Unfortunately, that love quickly turned sour. Tama sees Keith being bullied and neglected, so she does what she can to help him in the most violent and murderous ways imaginable. At first, Keith wants to believe that TAMA has no impact on the physical world, but after using an augmented reality (AR) device (similar to Pokémon Go), Keith sees for himself that his ‘best friend’ is very much alive, and incredibly dangerous (just like Chucky in Play child’s play).
Why the companion animals in TAMA are so murderously angry with humans
The companion system is actually ‘defunct’ when Keith downloads TAMA
As shown in the preview artwork shared by AIPT Comics, a horde of Cananimals is killing everyone in an office, the same people who developed Cananimals. Since Keith downloads the game after it becomes defunct, it’s safe to assume that the company was shut down after the massacre. But why are these companion animals murderous to begin with? Well, this goes back to the core question of this series: What if abandoned digital pets wanted revenge? It seems that the AI powering the companion animals is derived from past virtual pet systems (viz Tamagotchi), and they remember how weak people treated them.
