Played in X-Men ’97 by Gui Agustini, Sunspot is the superhero moniker of a young mutant named Roberto Da Costa, who has the ability to absorb and channel solar energy. The collectible is the latest in a line of Diamond Select Toys pieces based on X-Men: The Animated Seriesalthough, of course, it skips ahead to the 2024 revival and continuation of that show.

This Diamond Select Toys Sunspot collectible proves a resurgence of sorts for the character that began with X-Men ’97. Gui Agustini’s vision of Sunspot brought the character into the world of X-Men: The Animated Series for the first time, as the character had never appeared in the show’s original series. Although Sunspot was present in other X-Men projects, notably the animated film X-Men: Evolution and The New Mutants film, this collectible helps make the case that X-Men ’97 It is the character’s highest-profile non-comic appearance to date.
Even in the world of comics, Sunspot has been less celebrated than the better-known X-Men – Sunspot’s canceled Marvel book is a prime example. The character has had very little merchandise thus far, and the Diamond Select Toys collectible is the first piece of X-Men ’97products related to sunspots.
