SWAT Season 8's New Star Promoted to Series Regular Ahead of Mid-Season Finale

The new star of SCAM season 8 continues, being promoted to series regular before the show's mid-season finale. The long-running CBS action drama has seen some cast changes recently, with the departures of Jim Street (Alex Russell) and Dominique Luca (Kenny Johnson). But the Shemar Moore-led procedural has adjusted to the departures, updating recurring characters and introducing new faces that complicate the story.

TV line reports that Annie Ilonzeh was upgraded to series regular in SCAM season 8. Introduced as Devin Gamble's recurring character, the Chicago Fire alum was one of the main changes in the current edition of the CBS series. The other involved Niko Pepaj, who plays Miguel Alfaro, becoming a member of the main cast. The news about Ilonzeh comes ahead of a mid-season finale that will put special focus on her character.

Devin Gamble has a complicated history

Annie Ilonzeh as Devin Gamble in SWAT

Although she never wanted to be defined by family ties, Devin was born into a life of crime. She hoped she could go it alone as a high-profile newcomer to the LAPD. But why her father killed a police officer, she had a rough start with her new teammates. At one point, his windshield is adorned with the words “cop killer.” Hondo defends Devin since he was the one who recruited her. Devin also bonded with other members of the team, including Deacon (Jay Harrington).

In the midseason finale airing Friday, December 13th on CBS, Devin receives an unexpected visit from his father Ernie (played by General Hospital actor Rif Hutton). It is likely to cause stress and bring latent tensions back to the surface. But perhaps after the midseason finale, Devin can be fully welcomed back after the departure of several SCAM characters. Either way, it will be a chance for the show to examine the hypocrisy of Devin's teammates and bring closure to the story.

Our Take on SWAT's Latest Cast Change

This is how the show progresses

SCAM Season 9 has not yet been confirmed. But one way this could happen, both creatively and financially, is for the CBS series to swap out veteran cast members for new additions. It has an impact on the program's budget and, at story level, allows SCAM to stay up to date and experiment with different narrative approaches.
