The case falls into Olivia Benson’s hands because Ellie may have been sexually assaulted. In this episode of Law and Order: Special Victims UnitOlivia Benson and her team search for a suspect until evidence starts pointing in Chris’s direction.
“Rorschach” ends up telling the story of an abusive relationship, where the victim, Ellie, will most likely die at the hands of her attacker, Chris. It’s shocking, but Law and Order: SVUDetective Kate Silva appears to have initially suspected it was Chris. “Rorschach” is another Law & Order: SVU episode based on real-life cases. Your story is a heartbreaking tragedy similar to the real-life case of Gabby Petitowho disappeared in August 2021, and her fiance, Brian Laundrie, quickly became suspects. However, the show opts for a surprisingly optimistic approach.

In the same way as Law and Order SVUIn the episode, Gabby Petito was visibly distressed by the footage from the police officer’s body camera. However, she and Laundrie were ultimately cleared. The last official record of Gabby Petito was when she left her hotel on August 24, 2021, but there were reported sightings as late as August 27. Gabby Petito’s remains were found in September 2021almost a month after she was last seen. Law and Order: Special Victims Unit Season 26, Episode 6 notably changes the story from this point forward.
Ellie’s abusive boyfriend is caught and punished for his crime
Brian Laundrie died by suicide before authorities could get to him
Of course, “Rorschach” is only loosely based on the Gabby Petito case. It differs mainly in the outcome of both the victim and the perpetrator. In Law and Order: SVUEllie is found unconscious and after a day of surgery, Ellie’s neurosurgeon believes she is brain dead. Although “Rorschach” ends before we know whether Ellie’s mother will pull the plug, Ellie will probably never wake up again. However, the narrative offers some hope by leaving it as a cliffhanger. In the case of Gabby Petito, that hope was dashed when authorities found her deceased body.
By providing some closure in his loose recount, Law and Order: SVU portrays a more hopeful fictional retelling, where Ellie has a chance to live and Chris faces justice, unlike reality.
As for Chris, he is found alive, although almost stabbed to death. He successfully survived the surgery and survived, and as a result, faced Olivia Benson and the justice system. In real life, Brian Laundrie eluded the FBI for more than a month, going on the run before shooting himself to death. When his body was discovered Laundrie was already dead spurring outrage that Laundrie would never face justice for what he did. By providing some closure in his loose recount, Law and Order: SVU portrays a more hopeful fictional retelling, where Ellie is given a chance to live and Chris faces justice, unlike reality.
What really happened in the case of Gabby Petito
Brian Laundrie killed his fiancee, Gabby Petito, in August 2021
Although Brian Laundrie was a suspect from the beginning, investigators could not confirm that he was responsible for Gabby Petito’s disappearance until they discovered Laundrie’s notebook. According to The Boston Globe, Authorities found Laundrie’s diary, where the suspect confesses to killing Petitoin a Florida swamp. Up until this point, it was only assumed that Brian Laundrie was responsible for Petito’s murder. Furthermore, until investigators found Gabby Petito’s remains in Wyoming, it was also assumed that Laundrie had done something to her.

It is the ultimate tragedy, both in real life and in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. Gabby Petito’s case is a critical reminder that many people still suffer abuse. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, more than 12 million people are subjected to domestic violence in the United States each year. Ellie’s case in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit is based on the tragedy of Gabby Petito, but they are not the only ones affected by the violence. It is important that Law and Order: SVU continues to tell these stories whenever he can.
