Superman and Lois has always been about deep, rich characters, and the latest episode of the DC Universe series revealed just how painful the loss of the Man of Steel was after Doomsday killed him. Superman died in many different ways on screen, and many believe that the version of the “Death of Superman” story told in Superman and Lois is one of the best. With emotional stakes, excellent characterization, and storytelling that uses and twists the comic book canon in creative and respectful ways, the series told many original stories.
With Superman’s powers waning and an investigation into Lex Luthor’s love life, the series created a very real and lived-in world, populated by complex characters. The heart of the series is to investigate Superman’s family dynamics, including his relationship with his children.. However, the show got even bigger with this scale, exploring life and family dynamics in the town of Smallville. After that, Lois’ story on the CW series took a deeply disturbing turn.
Lois Season 4 Story Makes Superman’s Death Even More Painful
Lois Lane’s Cancer Story Makes Her Suffering Much Heavier
Superman and Lois presented Lois Lane’s saddest story in its last season, with the reporter being diagnosed with breast cancer. The show’s third season saw Lois discover this and recover from the consequences of it. This disturbing realization forced her to confront her own mortality in interesting ways throughout the season. In Superman and Lois episode 8, Lois finally receives some relief as it is shown that her fight against the illness has been won. However, the fact that it happened so late gives Superman’s death heartbreaking context.
After the loss of his own father Sam Lane Lois was also forced to deal with what appeared to be the permanent death of her husband. As the intrepid reporter battled continued grief at the thought that cancer could take her own life, she watched as her husband was beaten and killed. This would have put even more pressure on her to survive for the sake of her children. That desperate suffering was made even heavier by the show’s genuinely evil version of Lex Luthor’s horrific actions.
Lois’ DC Show Story Makes Superman & Lois’ Second Clark Kent Death Worse Again
Superman’s heart is starting to fade
After Superman’s death, Clark ended up being brought back with a version of Sam Lane’s heart. This heart gave him the push he needed in the last few episodes, but it was also revealed that Superman is now losing his powers. Sam’s human heart can’t do much for the hero, and it seems that he is increasingly weakened. This has led to speculation that the hero may in fact die at the end of the series.
After everything Lois Lane went through last season, this ending would be genuinely heartbreaking. Lois is finally out of cancer treatment and must still be grieving the loss of her father. ONEAdding the stresses of losing and recovering and then losing Clark again would be very painful for the character. Superman depends on and is needed by his wife and children, and it is important that the hero survives to live out his days with them.
While Superman is losing his powers, the hero will be able to live the rest of his life as a human being after the end of Superman and Lois. Giving Clark this opportunity to rest after everything he’s offered the world would be the right ending for him, but it would be even more necessary for characters like Lois. Simply, Lois has received a lot of pain and suffering, and the character deserves a victory. Hopefully The CW will see fit to give her the ending she deserves.
Superman and Loisthe Arrowverse’s seventh spinoff series, will take the titular characters from Metropolis to Smallville. The CW series is set after the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover, which saw the collapse of the multiverse and the merging of worlds into what is now Earth Prime. Lois and Clark are no strangers to the Arrowverse, with Hoechlin’s Superman having been introduced way back when. Supergirl season 2. Meanwhile, Tulloch’s Lois made her debut in 2018’s “Elseworlds” crossover. The pair are joined by a growing cast of characters that includes a new iteration of Lana Lang.
