The last episode of Superman and Lois saw the return of Clark Kent to the DC Universe, although it appears the series may still be plotting Superman’s end. This latest iteration of Superman’s on-screen death provided a compelling start to the CW series’ final season, using details from the comics and the show’s history to create a wonderfully engaging story. However, Superman and Lois is scheduled to end with the conclusion of this final season, and the show could be left with some heavy story ramifications.
With just a few episodes left, Superman and Lois provided unexpected stories of the Man of Steel and his family that audiences never expected to see. Built around a satisfying family dynamic, the show recently proved that Jordan, Jonathan, and Lois’ stories are as important, if not more important, to the series than Superman himself. Following that path, new details from the latest episode suggest that perhaps the Man of Steel will be eliminated entirely by the end of the show.
Superman & Lois Season 4 brought Clark back from the dead – but Superman’s days may be numbered
Clark Kent was regenerated with new weaknesses
Superman’s return from the dead was inevitable on the CW series, and Superman and Lois episode 4 ended with exactly that. This was done by restoring Sam Lane’s heart using Clark’s Kryptonian blood, which was then placed inside Clark, allowing him to come back to life. While Superman’s return was certainly important, this method of bringing the hero back brings up several concerns surrounding the hero’s vitality. Superman may not have long even if Clark survives.
Using Sam Lane’s heart, even though it was enhanced by a serum made from Clark’s own blood, raises several concerns. While Sam Lane was certainly a strong and healthy figure for his age, the fact was that Sam was in his 60s and his human heart was not the ideal specimen. While Clark’s body and blood are certainly capable of using that heart with everything he has, it will likely inhibit Superman’s powers in the future and may even force him to hang up his cape sooner or later.
Superman & Lois ending with Superman’s retirement would be a fitting end for the DC show
Superman’s legacy has been examined throughout the series
Happily, Superman and Lois spent much of its run exploring Clark’s entire family, including his children’s lives and unexpected stories about his Superman powers. Clark retiring as Superman at the end of the show would make a lot of sense; this is an elderly, established Superman who has spent his entire life fighting for good. With children on the cusp of adulthood who can take up his mantle, Clark may finally have the opportunity to let go. and spend the rest of his days in peace with his wife.
This would be a fitting and satisfying ending for Superman and Loisbut it would also contribute to the Arrowverse’s wonderful ending. With a new DC Universe from James Gunn and Peter Safran on the horizon, there’s no need to Superman and Lois to finish with possible provocations for the futurelike many of these projects, including even endings like Venom: The Last Dance suggest. Superman and Lois it can end with genuine finality for the hero, and that would be perfect after the series’ 4 seasons.
Superman and Lois Villain Clash Tease Sets the Perfect Reason for Superman to Retire
Doomsday will return in the series finale
The mid-season trailer for Superman and Lois creates more conflicts with Doomsday, a villain that Superman was unable to defeat, even with his powers at their peak just a few episodes ago. This next confrontation will likely be used to close the hero’s story, and it seems unlikely that Superman will be able to beat him now. Fortunately, the series has done a great job of setting up other heroes: in addition to Jordan and Jonathan, other characters like Steel and even his daughter Starlight will likely have to join the battle.
Seeing Superman have to rely on others to defeat Doomsday would be an effective ending to the show. Furthermore, If these other heroes defeat Doomsday, Superman will have the confidence that he will be allowed to move on and that the world will be safe without him. Superman and Lois did an excellent job of exploring the human dynamics between Clark and his family, and it’s clear that the hero would perhaps be happier if he no longer felt such a heavy responsibility for his heroism.
Superman and Lois could end without any more Superman, and that would be the perfect ending to the series. After a long and storied career for this version of the hero, it seems like he’s done everything he set out to do. Superman and Lois shows that even Superman sometimes needs help and that the world of heroes is bigger and better for all the impacts he has made. Allowing Clark to hang up his cape for the last time in the series finale would be the perfect end to an excellent show.
Based on the characters from DC Comics, Superman & Lois follows Clark Kent and Lois Lane, trying to live a quiet life in Smallville with their twin sons Jonathan and Jordan.
