Starscream’s new origin reveals that the despicable villain of the Transformers was once heroic

The Energy Universe version of Starscream is one of the most brutal villains yet seen in the Transformers franchise, but the character may not have always been so heartless and cruel. The preview for next month Transformers #13 Reveals the origins of the Decepticon on Cybertron, showing that he is not always evil…

Released by Skybound.comThe preview for Transformers #13 Comes from the creative team of Daniel Warren Johnson, Jason Howard, Mike Spicer & Rus Wooton. After a flashback to the moment Soundwave defeated Starscream for the right to lead the Decepticons, fans are treated to another flashback of Starscream on Cybertron.

The Starscream seen in the Cybertron flashback — referred to as “Ulstar” — is quite different from the feared villain fans know in the present.. He is joined by his friends Jetfire and Genvo, who pick him up from work to witness something they refer to as “It passes.”

Starscream’s origin makes the despicable villain more complex

The Decepticon isn’t always bad

The preview ends before readers get to see what Jetfire, Genvo, and Starscream are rushing to see, however Jorge Corona’s variant cover shows the three watching in awe as Omega Supreme flies overhead. If the arrival of Omega Supreme is truly what the three expect, it would be a major debut for them Transformers Corner of the Energon Universe. Traditionally, Omega Supreme was the last of the Guardian Robots, the peacekeeping giants that guarded the cities of Cybertron in years past. As one of the most powerful Autobots around, Omega Supreme is a valued ally for Optimus Prime and co., and could be a game-changer if he were to return in the present-day storyline.

Aside from the potential debut of Omega Supreme, the Preview is notable in that it shows what Starscream was like before the Autobot/Decepticon war. Genvo has already joined the Decepticons, and encourages his friends to join as well. Ulchtar/Starscream has no interest in the war, even preventing Genvo from swatting the insect-like “turbosects” because they are valuable to the cycle of life. It’s a far cry from the Decepticon villain attacking a hospital on Earth in the present day, so it will be intriguing to learn what happened to Ulkhtar between now and then to turn him into the cruel, derelict Starscream of today.
