Star Wars: Skeleton Crew introduced Star Wars youngest Darth Vader replacement, proving how truly evil Darth Vader was in comparison. Skeleton Crew It was a very interesting addition Star Wars movies and TV shows in their first 5 episodes. While there has been a lot of talk about Jude Law's character Jod Na Nawood potentially being a Jedi, this show isn't really about the Jedi or the Sith in the same way as countless others. Star Wars shows and movies are.
Instead of, Skeleton Crew is mostly about pirates, drawing on many pirate story tropes and stereotypes, from buried treasure to mutiny. This pirate arc unfortunately came to a head in Skeleton Crew episode 5 in a devastating way, leading to a critical and terrifying moment. Even in this situation, however, Jod Na Nawood may be a replacement for Darth Vader, but he still doesn't come close to the Sith Lord's true evil.
Star Wars Sets Up Jude Law's Character as a Failed Darth Vader Replacement
Skeleton Crew has already established that Jod Na Nawood is a Vader replacement
Even before Skeleton Crew episode 5, the show set Jod Na Nawood as a replacement for Darth Vader. In the very first episode, in the opening scene, Jod Na Nawood (as Captain Silvo – one of his many pseudonyms) attacks a New Republic freighter together with a gang of other pirates. This would already have a link to A New Hope with the Imperial attack on Leia's ship, but the dialogue in this scene solidifies this direct connection to Darth Vader's first scene in Star Wars.
In this scene, Silvo asks: “If this is a bulk carrier, why is its safe magnetically sealed?” It is no coincidence that this sentence construction exactly mirrors that of Darth Vader himself in A New Hope when he says, “If this is a consular ship, where is the ambassador?” Skeleton Crew Episode 5 took this Jod Na Nawood and Darth Vader connection a step further, and it was a much darker line.
Skeleton Crew episode 5 took Jod Na Nawood and Darth Vader's connection a step further.
Skeleton Crew Episode 5 shows that Jude Law's character is still a villain…
Episode 5 had a shocking and devastating twist
In Skeleton Crew episode 5, Jod Na Nawood turns on the children, going so far as to grab Fern and hold a knife to her throat in an attempt to make her give up the title of captain to him.. Although Nawood had already revealed how violent he really was, as he had burned his opponents with acid in the scene shortly before this, his violence towards children seemed quite different. Fern even expressed this herself, saying “You're an adult. You can't fight us; we're just children.”
This showed a much darker side to Jod Na Nawood. Yes, it was clear from the beginning that he was a true pirate and had selfish intentions to 'help' the children. While they may well have made it home safely with Nawood, it would have been accidental. He was really after the treasure, and that was never questioned.
Even in light of this reality, Nawood's threat to children came as a huge shock.
Even in light of this reality, Nawood's threat to children came as a huge shock. He seemed to develop genuine affection for them, even having a heart-to-heart with Wim at the beginning of episode 5. His true priorities were, however, confirmed in this terrifying scene, proving that, in the end, he is still a villain. in the end. However, he is still quite different from Darth Vader for one important reason.
But he's still not Anakin Skywalker
Vader's brutality is unparalleled, especially compared to this
While Jod Na Nawood's willingness to hurt Fern, and probably the other children, was horrific, it still doesn't come close to Darth Vader. There were a number of cruel Darth Vader moments in Star Warsbut none were as bad as the moment in Order 66 when he slaughtered the puppies. Although the moment when the little boy asks Anakin what they are going to do has been remembered to heaven, it is actually one of the most disturbing moments in the entire story. Star Wars timeline.
Nawood's violent behavior was reminiscent of this moment from Order 66, but the obvious and main difference is that Nawood didn't hurt the children in the end, while Anakin had very little hesitation in destroying a room of innocent, defenseless children. There is also the question of whether Nawood would have actually harmed Fern. It's terrible that he was threatening her and scaring the children in this way, but he may have trusted that as a child she would not refuse to give in when threatened. If that were the case, there would be an even bigger gap between Nawood and Vader.
It is clear that Skeleton Crew is drawing a connection between Nawood and Vader, especially in light of episode 5. However, as with many Darth Vader substitutes, Jod Na Nawood doesn't really come close to the brutality and evil of Lord Vader. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew the most moving moment yet proves that Darth Vader evil is still incomparable in Star Wars.
The first five episodes of Skeleton Crew are now streaming on Disney+.
