Star Wars' New “Hunk Of Junk” Starship Just Became A Lot Cooler

This article contains spoilers for episode 6 of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
Google's new "piece of junk" Starship just became a lot cooler. In 1977, George Lucas introduced viewers to the Star Wars galaxy courtesy of the Millennium Falcon. This ship may have looked like a piece of junk, but Han Solo bragged that it "made the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs."

Star Wars: Skeleton CrewOnyx Cinder took a step forward. The children have discovered the Onyx Cinder buried in the earth of their home world of Attin, and it shows every sign of falling apart. When the Onyx Cinder landed on Lanupa, parts fell off the hull. It's no surprise that in episode 6, the Lanupans decided to send the Onyx Cinder to a scrapyard. But at the end of the episode, the Onyx Cinder suddenly became much more impressive.

The onyx ash spilled the waste from its hull

Back Skeleton Crew episode 2, SM-33 warned the children not to press a specific button in the Onyx Cinder's cockpit: "the emergency hull demolition sequencer." The comment was meant for laughs, but attentive viewers certainly noticed when that scene was played in the recap at the beginning of episode 6. Sure enough, at the end of the episode, Fern had no choice but to press the button. It took a transformation incredible, how the Onyx Cinder has ditched its "piece of trash" exterior.

Han Solo was always a little embarrassed by the exterior of the Millennium Falcon. But it appears that Captain Tak Rennod deliberately sought to deceive by hiding the true shape of his ship under a false hull that was placed around it. The emergency hull demolition sequencer detonated charges that released this false hull, revealing the truth and allowing the Onyx Cinder to escape Lanupa.

Skeleton Crew's unexpected Starship Twist is absolutely perfect for the show

The Onyx Cinder in Star Wars Skeleton Crew

There is a sense in which the Onyx Cinder touch addresses the main themes of Skeleton Crew. This show is about deception, with kids struggling to navigate a strange and unpredictable galaxy; Wim, in particular, has a habit of trusting the wrong people (and crabs), as he complains about in this episode. But sometimes deception hides something much better than expected.

Of course, this doesn't mean that the Onyx Cinder has miraculously become a state-of-the-art starship. He's still been buried in the earth for centuries (at least), and his engine was still on fire when he left Lanupa; what is more, the first thing the children do with their “new ship” is drag it across the floor. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew It may have hidden this ship's true potential, but it's not exactly in good shape.

Set in the Star Wars universe, Skeleton Crew follows four young adventurers as they become lost in the galaxy while searching for their home planet. The series chronicles her exploration and encounters with diverse worlds and characters, presenting themes of friendship, discovery and the search for belonging.
