Notice! This post contains SPOILERS for Ewoks #2Star Wars just changed a fan favorite Return of the Jedi hero with just one word. As Seen in Marvel’s New and Canon Ewoks series, the residents of the Bright Tree village of Endor are in conflict with a remaining force of Imperials searching for hidden weapons. To this need, a familiar face has emerged to defend his fellow Ewoks, albeit in a very surprising way that changes their character forever.
In Star Wars: Ewoks #2 by Steve Orlando, Álvaro López and Laura Braga, the Ewok tribe of Bright Tree Village is still recovering from the recent Battle of Endor and the “cruel” ones they defeated with the help of the Rebellion. However, this new issue finds a group of Imperials and hired bounty hunters trying to use local myths to manipulate the Ewoks and get their help in finding a secret cache of weapons that the Empire left on the forest moon. When that fails, the group of strangers demands a hostage to act as a guide. However, Wicket vehemently disagrees… surprisingly speaking of Galactic Basic:
Although he does not yet have a complete understanding of the most common language in Star Wars Galaxy, the fact that Wicket can speak any Basic Galactic is quite impressive. Likewise, it’s a skill he didn’t possess before saying “enough” to the Imperials in this new edition. However, it stands to reason that Wicket heard a few words from Princess Leia, Threepio, and more rebels during Return of the Jedi and the Battle of Endor.
Wicket is becoming a major Ewok hero in the Star Wars canon
But speaking the basics is a big surprise
As seen in the issues of Star Wars: Ewoks published thus far, Wicket is a minority voice in Bright Tree, offering a more balanced caution when it comes to outsiders rather than distrust and outright banning future contact.. After all, Wicket was the first Ewok to befriend one of the rebels in Return of the Jedihaving brought Princess Leia to Bright Tree before the rest of the Rebellion became Bright Tree’s allies. That being said, the young Ewok hero is also trying to become a stronger warrior in this new series.
Having joined the powerful Ewok warrior Meedro on his hunts on the outskirts of Bright Tree, Wicket is trying to learn how to become stronger as someone the rest of the tribe can respect and listen to more often. However, all eyes were certainly on Wicket as he openly challenged these new outsiders who began to threaten his people and began to speak their language. Although these Imperials may be more dangerous to Bright Tree than the Rebels, Wicket’s new ability to speak Galactic Basic proves that working with strangers can still be good, the only reason he knows how to communicate with these new enemies in the first place.
What will happen to Wicket now?
Taken hostage by imperial forces
Impressed by Wicket’s ability to speak Basic, General Koyatta decides to stun Wicket and take him as his desired hostage. To that end, it appears that Wicket will have no choice but to become the Imperials’ guide to this hidden weapons cache.. However, it stands to reason that both Meedro and a fellow lone Ewok known as Red Ghost will team up to save the young Ewok warrior in the issues to come. Either way, it’s quite impressive that any Ewok can speak Galactic Basic, an important step in the species’ ability to one day evolve and join the Star Wars galaxy in general.
Ewoks #2 is now on sale at Marvel Comics.
