Star Wars is bringing its most underrated bounty hunter closer than ever to joining Luke Skywalker's Rebels

Beilert Valance is returning to Star Wars comics in the post-Return of the Jedi era, as the protagonist of the Marvel film bounty hunters comic series helps Luke Skywalker when he needs it most. The young Jedi Master may have prevailed on Endor, but when the Battle of Jakku begins, he finds himself overwhelmed by multiple enemies on multiple fronts; luckily, Valance is there to help.

Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku Republic under siege (2024) #3 – written by Alex Segura, with art by Stefano Raffaele – finds Luke being targeted by a new enemy, the Spice Runners of Kijimi. When this information is leaked to a New Republic spy, it also comes with a suggestion: that bounty hunter Beilert Valance could help protect Skywalker.

Fans familiar with the lore surrounding Beilert Valance know that the character was Han Solo's classmate at the Imperial Naval Academy on the planet Carida. The two had a competitive relationship, but after Valance's TIE fighter crashed and he was presumed dead, Solo returned for him. With the help of the other cadets, Valance's life was saved, but the accident resulted in his first set of cybernetics. Valance continued to fight for the Empire, but after suffering many injuries and cybernetic replacements, he was discharged from the Empire and eventually became a bounty hunter.

When Han Solo was carbonite, Beilert Valance felt he owed it to his friend to save Solo, and did everything he could to try to free Han from Boba Fett, although he was unsuccessful. In Marvel's Original Trilogy era comics, Valance has worked with the Rebellion on several occasions, and it's clear the relationship will continue, based on her last appearance alongside Luke Skywalker in Republic under siege; now, Valance may be one of the greatest assets the New Republic has.

Beilert Valance's Marvel Appearances Star Wars comics thus far have necessarily been limited; given that the character did not appear in the films, he could not become a full-fledged member of the Rebellion. Now, however, Marvel has reached the post-Return of the Jedi era, an open expanse in which many of the characters introduced in comics over the last decade can flourish.
