George Lucas made a terrible decision to Ahsoka Tano this remains problematic to this day – but Star Wars Luckily found ways to fix this. Ahsoka was introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars film, which in turn led to his role as the main character in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV program. Although Ahsoka was initially poorly received, in part because many took issue with Anakin Skywalker being given a Padawan, Ahsoka’s popularity grew exponentially, and she is now widely considered one of the Star Wars best characters.
Since then, Ahsoka has appeared in some of the Star Wars best TV shows including Star Wars Rebels, The Mandalorianand Ahsokabetween others. With Ahsoka Season 2 underway, its story is clearly not over yet. Despite its continually growing importance and popularity, an aspect of Ahsoka Tano’s life Star Wars the story was particularly unfortunate and Star Wars Had to find ways to deal with it.
George Lucas Created Ahsoka Tano’s (Horrible) Original Clone Wars Costume
Ahsoka’s Clone Wars outfit was very revealing – especially for a child
When Ahsoka was introduced in The Clone Warsshe was only 14 years old. Despite this young age, Ahsoka first appeared in an outfit consisting of a skirt and a tube top, with the tube top in particular being shockingly revealing.. This follows a trend of Star Wars revealing outfits for female characters – Aayla Secura is another great example, as is Princess Leia in her so-called ‘slave outfit’ in Return of the Jedi-but this looked quite different considering Ahsoka was still a child when she was shown in this outfit.
According to starwars.com, This outfit design came from George Lucas himself. The website explains:
“Filoni originally dressed the Togruta he called Ashla in a long, pleated skirt. As she transformed into the Ahsoka we know now, her physical appearance and fashion sense began to change; we can thank Lucas himself for giving the lithe Padawan that shorter skirt and tube top.”
While the logic behind these changes remains unclear, Star Wars began to recognize that this outfit was not the best choice, as the most recent retcons proved.
Star Wars Reworked Ahsoka’s Original Costume
Newer versions of Ahsoka around this time have changed outfits
Ahsoka Episode 5 thrillingly portrayed live-action Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano in the Clone Wars era for the first time, bringing Hayden Christensen back to his role as Anakin and casting Ariana Greenblatt as the young Ahsoka. This flashback in Ahsoka also required the show to address this issue with Ahsoka’s original costume, howeverand he did it very intentionally. While Ahsoka’s outfit remained more or less the same in color and basic structure, the tube top was gone.

In fact, the version of this costume seen in Ahsoka seems much closer to what Dave Filoni initially had in mind for the character. The 2009 book, The Art of Star Wars: The Clone Warswritten by Frank Parisi and Gary Scheppke (with an introduction by Dave Filoni and a foreword by George Lucas), it features original Ahsoka Tano concept art that is much more in keeping with her Ahsoka appearance in episode 5.
The same page as The Art of Star Wars: The Clone Wars includes a quote from Dave Filoni that once again reinforces that George Lucas specifically insisted on a short skirt and tube top.

Ultimately, it was wonderful to see this change for Ahsoka. While it is not possible to go back in time and completely remake your appearance in Clone Wars movie and TV show, updating the look in Ahsoka it was a way to correct the previous problem and subtly acknowledge that this was a bad choice. Happily, Ahsoka Tano finally it was done correctly by Star Wars.
