The Mythosaurus was seen in live action for the first time in The Mandalorianalthough it has been an integral part of Mandalorian lore in Star Wars for many, many years. First seen on Boba Fett’s armor in the Star Wars original trilogy, the Mythosaurus is an ancient creature that is directly associated with the Mandalorians. The helmet’s design is inspired by the giant creature’s hooked horns and elongated snout, resulting in the helmet’s iconic cutouts and T-shaped visor design.
Although the Mythosaurus is vitally important to Mandalorian culture, not much is known about it, due to the fact that it went extinct at some point in galactic history. The Mandalorians’ ability to tame it, however, is what helped establish their status as the galaxy’s greatest warriors in ancient times. This is something Mandalorians are still revered for, as seen in The Mandalorian. Despite this lack of knowledge, there is still a small wealth of knowledge that follows the great Mythosaurus. Here’s everything we know about the ancient creature so far.
The mythosaur in the Star Wars canon
It is set to play a key role
Much of the mythosaurus lore in Star Wars the canon was established in The Mandalorianstarting with the live action Star Wars First episode of the TV show. Kuiil the Ugnaught mentions Din Djarin’s ancestors riding “the great mythosaur“when the bounty hunter is ready to give up on learning to ride a blurrg, proving that the story of the Mandalorians and the Mythosaurus is well known throughout the galaxy. The Mythosaurus is also revered as the symbol of Din Djarin’s people, the Children of the Watch, as the Armorer always has a beskar replica installed in her forge.
It was in The Mandalorian In season three, however, the mythosaur lore really started to take shape. In The Book of Boba Fett, the Armorer speaks of a prophecy of the great Mythosaurus rising once against to herald a new erasomething that begins to materialize in The Mandalorian Season 3, when Bo-Katan Kryze spots the creature beneath the Living Waters of Mandalore. The Nite Owl even takes on the Mythosaurus as another signet after losing one of its shoulder pads. This prophecy has not yet been fully fulfilled, although Grogu has made a connection with it.
Origin and history of the mythosaur from Star Wars Legends
Mandalorians conquered the ancient beasts
In Star Wars Legends, the Mythosaurus has more of an origin story and a slightly larger role to play in Mandalorian history. The creatures used to roam the world now known as Mandalorehaving him as his own until the arrival of the Mandalorians, known then as Mandalorian Taung. Led by Mandalore the First, the Mandalorians conquered the ancient beasts, soon after claiming the planet for themselves and naming it Mandalore.
This rich origin story is missing from the Star Wars canon at the moment, but it could easily be reinstated should the opportunity arise.
Despite being killed off, mythosaurs continued to live on in Mandalorian culture in Legends, notably becoming the source of many of their strongest weapons, buildings, and even pieces of armor. There was a mythosaur skull mask that was erected for those who assumed the title of Mand’alor, although eventually their culture eliminated the use of such ceremonial masks. This rich origin story is missing Star Wars canonical as of now, but could easily be reinstated if the opportunity arises.
How the mythosaur became extinct
There are different accounts
Canon and Legends have similar but also opposing opinions on how exactly the Mythosaurus became extinct. In canon, there is little information about what happened, although it is known that the Mandalorians came and domesticated the large Mythosaurus enough to ride it. The timeline of its extinction and the reasoning behind it are murky at best, but it is believed that These ancient creatures went extinct before the devastation of Mandalore’s surfacewhich saw the planet go from a lush, green land to desolate stretches of sand.
In Legends, the Mythosaurus became extinct due to the Mandalorian Taung’s actions when they arrived. The conquest of the planet that became known as Mandalore left the Mythosaurus completely deadwhich is what allowed them to use the skull and bones for materials, weapons, and more. There is no known record of Mandalorians riding the Mythosaurus in Legends, although Boba Fett rides a Mythosaurus-adjacent creature in the infamous Star Wars Holiday Specialmeaning it could very well have happened while the murder was taking place.
What the return of the mythosaur would mean for Mandalore
The prophecy would be fulfilled
The return of the Mythosaurus would have a profound impact on Mandalore, mainly because of the prophecy brought to life by the Armorer. It has already been set in motion and shaped the destiny of the Mandalorians; It’s the sighting of the Mythosaurus in the Jellyfish that finally encourages Bo-Katan to lead the charge back to Mandalore to reclaim the world for herself again. Although the Mythosaurus remains hidden during this period, he still connects with Grogu at the end of it all, which seems to suggest that he has plans to return in the future.
This means that the prophecy has not yet been fulfilled and the new era of Mandalore has not yet begun. Although the Mandalorians have just reclaimed their homeworld, there is still much to rebuild. The planet was utterly destroyed by the Great Purge, and its own species nearly became extinct at the hands of the Empire, as did the Mythosaurus itself. Once they grow stronger and learn to live together as one people again, the Mythosaurus will be ready to emerge and herald the new era of his people.
This major event is likely to occur in the next Star Wars film, be it The Mandalorian and Grogu or Dave Filoni The Mandalorianculminating film of the era. The Mythosaurus would be a great asset in battleand its appearance would certainly be one of the Star Wars‘ most memorable climactic battles yet. The ancient beast has yet to be seen in full live action and has never been seen fighting before. The opportunities now presented due to the official debut of the Mythosaurus in The Mandalorian are unlimited and provide an exciting experience Star Wars future.
