Star Trek: Lower Decks is back for its final season, and an exclusive clip from New York Comic Con offers a look at one of the season’s major plotlines. The adult-oriented animated show began in 2020 and is currently hosted on the Paramount+ streaming service. Despite the positive reception, the show comes to an end this year. Lower decks Season 5 is set to premiere on October 24th with two episodes, and will air weekly until the finale is released on December 19th. The final episodes will focus on the crew shooting down mysterious space holes.
Ahead of the final season, Paramount is offering a glimpse into the problem of dealing with space holes without adequate preparation. The studio released a poster to honor the last season, which pays homage Star Trek V: The Final Frontier:
The image reveals the main characters’ faces next to the USS Cerritos, while a series of mysterious figures wander beneath them. Along with the poster, Paramount released an exclusive clip, which reveals an early encounter with space holes.
The 90-second clip shows the USS Cerritos finding only a hole and being unwittingly sucked into an interdimensional portal. After trying to return home, they are greeted by another ship, which is revealed to be an alternate version of the Cerritos. Alternate captain Becky Freeman offers to speak to the crew.
What the Pothole Clip Means for Lower Decks
The clip reveals what space holes really are
Paramount has already announced that space holes are nothing more than subspace rifts, but the sci-fi jargon can be a bit confusing. This clip reveals what rifts really are: portals between dimensions. Throughout the season, characters will likely encounter alternate versions of themselves and other characters from the Star Trek universe. This will offer a way for the characters to consider the different paths their lives could have taken, which will be an interesting note for the final season.
The clip reveals that Becky Freeman will likely be the first character the season explores in depth, but each portal could very well reveal information about different characters. With such a rich premise, it will be a natural way to bring closure to everyone on the show. There are only 10 episodes in the final season, and with the finale quickly approaching, there is little time left to wrap up all of the series’ plotlines. An episode for each character can provide much-needed closure.
Our Take on the Hole Clip on Lower Decks
This will not be an entirely unique premise, as Star Trek Have explored alternative realities before. The Mirror Universe is an example, as it explores more violent versions of its characters, who lack the moral heart of their Prime Universe variants. It remains to be seen whether the space holes are a glimpse of the Mirror Universe or whether it is secretly another universe. Regardless of the impact of the season Star Trekthe tradition, Star Trek: Lower Decks the latest clip from season 5 is proof that the series hasn’t lost its comedic, sci-fi edge.
