Having earned high marks from critics throughout its run on Paramount+, it was no surprise that Season 5 of Lower decks was equally well received. Screen speech considered the fifth season the best of all and noted that struck a perfect balance between genuinely exciting space adventures and humorous Trekkie fan service. This appears to be the consensus, with some adding that the series came out on top and at the height of its powers (through Cutting Film). The program's impressive 89% score on Rotten tomatoes perhaps best sums up Season 5's critical performance.

After reconciling her promotion issues, Lieutenant Mariner returned aboard the Cerritoswhere she intended to be less self-destructive in Lower decks season 5. As the final season's release date approached, Paramount+ released a feature film trailer to Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5. The lengthy teaser begins with a log from Captain Freeman as she ironically praises the many virtues of her crew. As its record progresses, the trailer shows several clips of familiar characters getting into various dangerous and hilarious situations. A series of in-jokes are teased, and the trailer ends with a room full of Ensign Harry Kims from Travelerincluding one who finally got an elusive promotion.
