Notice! This post contains SPOILERS for Amazing Spider-Man #63Marvel has officially started scheduling a new rematch between Spider-Man and Juggernaut. As seen in the current race of Amazing Spider-ManPeter Parker has become Earth's new champion in the Covenant of Cyttorak, an annual series of tests to keep the world safe normally completed by Doctor Strange but has now been outsourced to Spider-Man now that Doctor Doom is the new Sorcerer Supreme ( and cannot be disturbed). Now, Juggernaut is about to get involved and will likely end up fighting the Webslinger once again.
At the end of Amazing Spider-Man #63 by Justina Ireland and Marcio Menyz, Spider-Man (wearing Doom's new magical armor) has already taken down three of the eight descendants of Cytorrak, the Oblivion Lord of the Crimson Cosmos, whose power Doctor Strange has harnessed for decades to keep the world safe . This means that the Webslinger also died three times, using the Reeds of Raggadorr to resurrect himself after each fight. However, Spider-Man's role in Covenant will likely get a LOT more difficult, especially now that Marve's The Unstoppable Juggernaut tease is on the way.
Marvel Teases Juggernaut's Involvement in the Cytorrak Covenant
It was only a matter of time before the unstoppable X-Man got involved
A classic X-Men villain turned X-Man, Cain Marko's Juggernaut seems to sense something is wrong after Spider-Man's third victory against one of Cyttorak's descendants. Almost as if in a trance, Juggernaut tells his fellow X-Man Magick that “he must prepare himself.”. As such, it's not hard to assume that Spider-Man will soon come face to face with Juggernaut in the coming issues, and Marko could very well find himself compelled by Cyttorak to serve as one of his descendants in the Covenant.
Juggernaut's teased involvement in future editions of Amazing Spider-Man shouldn't be so surprising. After all, Marko's power as an unstoppable force has long come from Cyttoarak through his discovery of the Crimson Gem, which transformed Charles Xavier's half-brother into an impressive powerhouse as the Earth-based avatar of the deity. To that end, solicitations and previews for future issues have teased every X-Men's involvement with the Covenant in some way, including a handful of issues in which Spider-Man himself may become the new avatar of Cyttorak, a.k.a. “The Spider-Naut”, potentially after Marko's possible defeat.
Spider-Man's rematch with the Juggernaut will be much bigger than the classic showdown
Amazing Spider-Man #229-#230
It's important to note that Spider-Man and Juggernaut's first fight took place in 1982. Amazing Spider-Man #229-230. In it, Juggernaut nearly kills Madame Web and causes massive collateral damage before Spider-Man manages to trap Marko in the still-damp cement of a new building's foundation. Furthermore, 2020 Juggernaut #3 directly referenced the epic showdown with Marko being served papers to appear in court and answer for the millions of dollars in damage he caused during the first fight.
“Spider-Man will be mystically amplified and probably won’t be afraid of throwing punches with Juggernaut, nor of dying, since he still has more of the Reeds…”
However, we can only imagine how much bigger and more epic this new rematch will be in future editions of Amazing Spider-Man. After all, it seems very likely that Cyttorak (or one of his descendants) will likely manipulate Juggernaut into taking on Spider-Man. After all, it's been a while since Marko has actually been a villain in the Marvel Universe. Likewise, Spider-Man will be mystically amplified and probably won't be afraid of throwing punches with Juggernaut, nor of dying, since he still has more of the Reeds. Either way, it should be a very exciting rematch for the ages.
Amazing Spider-Man #63 is now on sale at Marvel Comics.
