Notice! This post contains SPOILERS for The Amazing Spider-Man #61
A new era has arrived for Spider-Manwhich gave him an impressive new healing factor to show how dark power can truly be in the Marvel Universe. As the new Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Doom has chosen to outsource certain mystical tests that Doctor Strange would normally have performed himself. To that end, Doom has chosen Spider-Man to become the new “Champion of the Alliance of Cyttorrak”, meaning Spidey now has to fight Cytorrak’s eight descendants while wearing the new Arcane Armor (courtesy of Doom). . However, Spider-Man’s first fight redefined the meaning of the word pain thanks to his new healing abilities.
In The Amazing Spider-Man #61 by Joe Kelly and Ed McGuinness, Spider-Man eventually agrees to become the Champion of Doom, facing one of the descendants wearing his new armor while also holding eight “Reeds of Raggadorr” that can restore his afterlife. To that end, Spider-Man sacrifices himself to defeat this first descendant by entering a black hole located in the heart of this first dark god. Although one of the powerful Reeds is used to bring Spider-Man back to life, the Webslinger’s new mystical healing factor proves to be the furthest thing from pleasant.
Spider-Man just suffered the worst death imaginable
Spaghettification through a black hole
Upon entering this black hole, Spider-Man’s body has been effectively spaghettified, an excruciating process in which the body is stretched and compressed as it enters the black hole’s gravity well.. Although the atomized death is almost instantaneous, the space-time distortion makes it feel like 96 hours from Spider-Man himself. To that end, it’s hard to imagine a death that could be more painful than this one, not to mention the fact that Spider-Man will apparently suffer seven more similar deaths, which could very well be even worse as this new mystical arc goes. continues.
It’s also worth mentioning that all of this is explained by none other than Phil Coulson, the current personification of Death in the Marvel Universe, as he is the wielder of the powerful Death Stone. Instead of putting Spider-Man through the normal admissions process that apparently comes with crossing to the other side, Coulson stops when he sees that Spider-Man is with the Reeds. However, Coulson surprisingly apologizes and tells Spider-Man to stay strong, knowing that what is about to happen to the Websligner is far worse than the horrible death he just suffered.
Spider-Man’s new magical healing factor is just as brutal
Redefining the meaning of pain
One would think that a healing factor would inherently be a good thing for Spider-Man, allowing him to come back to life after being so brutally torn apart. However, this new edition shows that the process of restoring Peter Parker’s body and reversing the atomization process is far from comfortable. As shown in this new issue, all Spider-Man can say is that the pain he endured while his body was being completely reconstituted was inconceivable.
“There is one hero that Spider-Man should absolutely ask for help in future issues…”
Keeping all this in mind, it’s no wonder Spider-Man is barely able to function at the end of this issue and is begging for help. This really shows how painful a healing factor can be, even if the end result is extremely advantageous. That said, Spider-Man will clearly need to talk to someone if he wants to maintain his sanity during the fights to come, and Doctor Strange’s spirit seen at the end of the issue probably won’t be enough. . That being said, there is one hero that Spider-Man should absolutely turn to for help in future issues.
I’m really hoping Spider-Man catches up to Wolverine
Logan knows all about pain (and how to be brought back from the abyss)
If there’s any hero and established friend of Spider-Man that Peter could turn to for support, it’s Wolverine. After all, Wolverine is all too familiar with the pain that comes from an accelerated healing factor and the ability to come back from certain death itself. After all, this is the X-Man who canonically healed himself from almost all of his flesh being burned, having his heart removed from his chest, surviving a nuclear explosion, being run over by a steamroller, his adamantium skeleton being torn apart. his flesh by Magneto, eaten by the Hulk, and more extreme experiences he managed to free himself from.
Likewise, I’d also love to see Wolverine himself get in touch with Spider-Man when and if he learns of his new mystical status quo. The two heroes are canonically friends and I would certainly imagine that Wolverine would be there to help Spider-Man manage these new, extreme levels of pain that come with this new healing factor that seems to rival Logan’s impressive abilities.. Either way, it will be fascinating to see how Spider-Man deals with his next seven deaths in the Marvel Universe.
