As Sony continues to struggle to bring its Sony Spider-Man universe together, a fan on Instagram made an incredible delivery crossover between Spider-Man 2099 and Venom in amazing fanart. User grozell573 has an account where he showcases some beautiful artwork that largely revolves around the Spider-Verse films, with a lot of attention paid to Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099. In early 2024, the artist posted a set of work-in-progress images that saw Venom and Spider-Man 2099 face off in spectacular fashion.
Of course, this is simply a fan’s effort to Show off your skills and pay homage to a beloved film seriesbut it also feels like a missed opportunity for Sony. While the animated Spider-Verse continues to release spectacular new stories, SSU appears to be struggling to deliver meaningful stories that win big at the box office. And now that your biggest earner, Poisonhad its final entry with Tom Hardy in the hot seat released, it seems further away than ever for a crossover to occur.

Venom’s apparent final foray into the SSU was marked by Venom: The Last Danceand while this film clearly leaves the door open for future stories to be told, Spider-Verse has the potential to bring Venom back. Spider-Man 2099 isn’t necessarily a bad guy, he just firmly believes that Miles Morales can’t prevent an impending disaster in his timeline. Otherwise, he doesn’t see Morales as a true spider variant. But if Venom played a role in an upcoming title, it could be a great opportunity to have Spider-Man 2099 and Venom fight.
