Space balls 2 Warner Bros. received a major progress update from co-writer Josh Gad that reveals just how far along production is on the upcoming sci-fi comedy sequel. Space balls was originally released in 1987, the film directed by Mel Brooks acting as a parody of Star Wars. The next Space balls 2 was announced in June 2024, being developed by Amazon MGM Studios and produced by Gad and Brooks. It was also revealed that Gad was writing the script alongside Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (Pokémon Detective Pikachu), while also being announced to star in the comedy film.
Talking to Forbes, Gad revealed the draft script for Space balls 2 is completeand may his readers have “was surprised.” The co-writer and star explained how Brooks’ support was extremely helpful in the film’s development, particularly because it coincides with the joke about the Yogurt sequence made in the original. However, he made sure not to reveal any surprises. When asked about the potentially titled sequel Spaceballs 2: the quest for more moneyhe simply said “Watch this space!” Check out what Gad had to say below:
Without MGM taking me to the Culver prison cells, I can say the recruitment is done. Everyone who read it was impressed. The process of working on this with and alongside Mel Brooks has been one of the highlights of my career.
It was kind of a fever dream that all this happened. Mel has been incredibly supportive and engaged and electrified by this because it’s the one that surprisingly got away. It’s a dream to finally be able to make the reality prophesied by Yogurt in the first film happen. I can’t say more than that. I can’t tell you anything more [the] process at this point, but I can say that every hour of every day is now spent getting this project closer and closer to reality – and I think we’re approaching the end zone here.
What Gad’s update means for Spaceballs 2
Production is going well
There are currently no details on what the sequel’s story will involve, other than that the film will be led by director Josh Greenbaum (Strays). Although it is not clear whether Space balls 2 will feature returning actors, the ending of the original film laid the groundwork for another adventure with Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and Barf (John Candy). However, the latter would need to be recast due to Candy’s death, leaving it unclear whether the sequel will actually follow the same group of characters as the original.
Fortunately, with Disney producing so much Star Wars content since 2015, the parody will have a lot of material to make fun of the franchise. Space balls 2 can also spoof other science fiction films such as avatar or Dunelining up with the many references to 80s sci-fi films in the original. Since the script is already impressing those Gad talks about it with, there there seems to be no shortage of hilarity that will occur during the next filmindicative of how impressive the sequel will be.
Our opinion on the Spaceballs 2 script being completed
The sequel is approaching
Gad’s update is very good news for Space balls 2signaling that the film will likely resemble the feel of Brooks’ older works, like the original. While not much is known yet about what to expect from its story and characters, its current status indicates that more will be revealed sooner or later. Now that the draft script is ready, revisions, casting and filming will be done soon, which means the sequel is really wrapping up every day.
