Sony's CEO broke cover to address the dismal box office performance and critical reception of the company's Spider-Man spinoff films, placing the blame on critics who "trashed" the Marvel films.

Outgoing executive Tony Vinciquerra, who joined the company in 2017 to oversee a difficult period following the now-infamous 2014 cyberattack that damaged the studio. Asked about his management, Vinciquerra told the LA Times that the recent launch of Kraven: The Hunter “It's probably the worst release we've had in 7 and a half years, so it didn't do very well, which I still don't understand, because the movie isn't a bad movie.”

Pressed to learn more about the performance of the Spider-Man spin-off universe (Sony's SSU), Vinciquerra was upbeat in addressing what he believes is to blame:

Let’s just touch on “Madame Web” for a moment. “Madame Web” underperformed in theaters because the press simply crucified it. It wasn't a bad movie and it was great on Netflix. For some reason, the press decided they didn't want us to make these movies out of “Kraven” and “Madame Web,” and the critics just trashed them. They also did this with “Venom”, but the audience loved “Venom” and made “Venom” a big hit. They're not terrible films. They were simply destroyed by press criticism for some reason.

Additionally, the LA Times asked the executive if he believes the strategy of the “Spider-Man” universe needs to be rethought, again suggesting that critics have an agenda against SSU films and suggesting that the critical response would be unfairly biased, not no matter how good it was. any future Spider-Man spin-offs would be:

I think we need to rethink that, just because he was bitten by a snake. If we launch another one, it will be destroyed, no matter how good or bad it is.
