Sonic the Hedgehog 3 took the lead Mufasa: The Lion King at the domestic box office before Christmas. Both films are continuations of successful franchises, with the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 release marking the third live-action feature film in the video game adaptation franchise that also includes the Paramount+ spinoff show Knuckles. Meanwhile, Disney's photorealistic CG musical Mufasa is a prequel to the 2019 remake The Lion Kingwhich grossed US$1.66 billion, becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time, until the record was surpassed by Inside Out 2 in 2024.

Put Deadlinefrom Saturday morning, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is projected to take first place at the domestic box office with an estimated total of $70.5 million over its three-day opening weekend. This is more than enough to allow him to take down Moana 2which topped the charts for three consecutive weekends following its midweek release on Thanksgiving. It's also passing easily Mufasa: The Lion Kingwhich has a projected domestic opening of between $36 and $38 million.
