Warning: SPOILERS for Solo Leveling beyond the anime
While Song Jinwoo dominates the Ground Leveling scenario, the Shadow Monarch is far from the only important hunter or interesting character in the series. In fact, the story contains a vibrant tapestry of complex characters, each with their own stories, desires, and motivations. By devoting all of their attention to Jinwoo, fans may unintentionally miss out on the fascinating arcs and drives of other characters, who play a crucial role in advancing the plot.
One of the most compelling characters often overshadowed by Jinwoo’s dominance is his fellow Hunter and future wife. Cha Hae-In. In many ways, she is the complete opposite of Jinwoo. Before becoming a hunter, Hae-In was a high-level athlete whose promising career was derailed by a debilitating ankle injury. However, she successfully transferred the unbreakable discipline, resilience, mental toughness, and focus commonly found in athletes to her new profession. This allowed her to stand out as South Korea’s only S-Rank Hunter and establish herself as one of the greatest S-Rank Hunters of all time.
Cha Hae-In’s ability to smell is unique among hunters
Cha Hae-In was the epitome of a hunter of hunters
In addition to her exceptional physical ability, mental acuity, and technical knowledge, Cha Hae-In possesses several unique abilities that set her apart from other Hunters. Chief among them is an extraordinary adaptation of a fundamental human sense – available to all, but elevated to remarkable heights upon its Awakening. This exceptional ability is none other than your sense of smell. In fact, his Awakening has amplified this sense, allowing him to perceive “mana,” the source of energy that allows hunters and monsters to wield magic and display superhuman abilities.
On your own, This ability serves as a warning systemallowing users to identify nearby Hunters or Monsters. However, when combined with Hae-In’s powers, abilities, and experience, he evolves into a personal “spider-sense” that allows him to identify individuals with mana in a crowd or on the battlefield. In combat, this ability is invaluable, granting Hae-In real-time situational awareness of the location of friends and enemies. Combined with his exceptional speed and power, this ability gives him an overwhelming advantage, allowing him to navigate battles with unparalleled precision.
In addition to her role in combat, Hae-In’s keen sense of smell played a crucial role in her connection with Jinwoo. Having relied on this sense to defeat opponents and even save her life, she trusted it implicitly. So when she encountered a powerful Jinwoo masking his true strength, something felt wrong. His experience dictated that someone with his apparent ability should have an extremely potent mana scent. Instead, it had no discernible odor. This circumstance meant that either Hae-In’s sense of smell had failed her – something she knew wasn’t possible – or Jinwoo was hiding his true nature.
Cha Hae-In deserved more focus on solo leveling
Although Ground Leveling features a diverse cast of compelling characters besides Sung Jinwoo, Cha Hae-In undoubtedly deserves more recognition. Although her eventual marriage to Jinwoo and the birth of her son, Sung Su Ho – a powerful hunter in his own right – contribute to her appeal, her captivating personal journey stands on its own. In other words, Hae-In’s story is as convincing as Jinwoo’s. To be sure, Hae-In’s story offers a compelling opportunity for creators to further explore her character, warranting a dedicated spin-off or sequel.
As mentioned, Hae-In is one of the most powerful Hunters in history. But unlike Jinwoo – who was chosen by the system to be its ambassador – or other Hunters who gained superpowers and abilities during their awakening, Hae-In’s rise to the top of the Hunter hierarchy is largely due to her hard work. and meticulous attention to detail. and determination to put yourself in the best position to succeed. In this way, she resembles classic comic book heroes like Batman, who maximize their abilities despite having powers that seem modest compared to others in their profession.
These are just a few aspects of Cha Hae-In’s character that were introduced but not fully explored in the story. They suggest that, in addition to being one of the most powerful characters, she was also one of the most complex. A deeper dive into her life before becoming a Huntress, along with her training, battles, and personal struggles on the way to S Rank, would offer fans valuable insight into her journey – especially after meeting Jinwoo. This added depth would allow fans to experience new perspectives within the Ground Leveling universe – while helping to expand that universe for further exploration.
