Co-created by Justin Roiland and Star Trek: Lower Decks Mastermind Mike McMahan, the Hulu animated show followed the titular family of aliens coming to Earth in order to escape the destruction of their plan, Shlorp, and trying to acclimate to life with humanity. The family of aliens consists of team leader Corvo, his husband and pupa specialist Terry, Corvo’s replicant/son Yumiulak and Terry’s replicant/daughter Jessie.
The Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown October Serves as a sequel to the special that aired between seasons 3 and 4, with Terry and Korvo trying to get the family into a local country club, though they realize they have to subdue their love from the titular season to be accepted. Before they can do that, however, a witch arrives and curses the family for killing the Great Pumpkin in the previous Halloween special, leading to them all turning into a variety of spooky creatures.

Before the premiere of the special, Screen Rant Interview stars Dan Stevens and Thomas Middleditch to discuss The Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown OctoberHow the former adjusted to the fast-paced nature of the show’s dialogue, which holidays they would like to see go to war in a future special, and their thoughts on a potential Monsterverse team-up.
Stevens had to revise the first special to prepare for the “Bankers“Sequel
Middleditch had a very specific reaction to seeing the script
Screen Rant: Dan, it’s great to finally get to chat with you for this show, Thomas, always nice to see you and talk to Solar opposites. The Halloween Special Part 2 Is such a blast from start to finish, a great continuation of the original. Dan, you didn’t get to be a part of the first Halloween special, so how did it feel to bring Corvo’s fear of Halloween to life this season?
Dan Stevens: Yeah, it was bunkers. I had to explain what happened last time. But yeah, it was great fun.
And then Thomas, for you, when you saw what was going to happen this particular with the return of the Great Pumpkin and the curse on the family, what was your first reaction to the script?
Thomas Middleditch: This was the Macaulay Culkin GIF from Home Alone 2 like this: [fist pumping]. Or the GIF of Jack Nicholson from – which is the one with him and Helen Hunt – but it’s a GIF of him nodding, and he has a f—-ng psycho look on his face and nodding. [Laughs]
Stevens followed his co-star lead for the show “High-octane“Pass
“…Corvo has a lot he wants to say very often.”
Dan, I’d like to turn to you next, because one thing I’ve always heard from talking to Thomas and Sean and Mary is that one note they always get is, “faster, faster, faster,“When it comes to delivering their dialogue for the show. I’d love to hear what it was like for you getting used to the pacing of the show, especially with something as bonkers as The Halloween Special.
Dan Stevens: Yeah, it’s pretty high octane, and I’ve found that it helps if I go to the sessions heavily caffeinated and just ready to hit the ground running very fast. Yes, it’s great, I really follow their lead. They very much laid the pace, set the tone, and Corvo has a lot he wants to say very often. He is a man of many words, and you just have to get them out as quickly as possible.
Terry is “Always quick to celebrate the monkey’s paw”
Corvo is trying to stop”Being such a humbug about Halloween”
I’d like to hear about your transformation into a ghost for this special, Thomas, and how Terry actually feels about it?
Thomas Middleditch: Well, with most things he sees, he probably starts out like, “This is great!” And then realizes it’s bad. [Laughs] He’s like, “Looks like solar opposites are ghosts, baby!” And then realizes it stinks, and he wants to be real, so he can bump bearings with his new husband. I just love that he is always quick to celebrate the monkey’s paw situation.
So Dan, I know, of course, Corvo isn’t necessarily happy with the curse—and I don’t want to give away spoilers—but it becomes a very heartfelt, full-circle arc for him. What do you think goes through Corvo’s mind through so much of this adventure, this special?
Dan Stevens: Yeah, I think, as always, he’s trying to fit into the human world. He’s decided that he hates Halloween, and part of his journey this time is coming to terms with what makes Halloween great, and that’s what’s going to finally save him and save them all, is to get his head around it, and Not so humbug about Halloween. What I think is a lovely, lovely journey, appreciate Heidi Klum’s costume party, for example, and not just downplay it.
The duo have some wild ideas for future holiday wars
“It is written, of course.”
Now, I love that, in addition to Corvo embracing it, we get to see one holiday go to war against another holiday. I’m sure there will be more holiday specials in the future. Which two holidays would you like to see a lot against each other in the future of this show?
Dan Stevens: Thomas has the list of Great American Holidays on his multiscreen station there.
Thomas Middleditch: In my data center.
Dan Stevens: I don’t have that luxury.
Thomas Middleditch: The plebe is on his phone. [Laughs]
Dan Stevens: What should I do?
Thomas Middleditch: Well, okay, something fun that you can already play with is April Fool’s Day.
Dan Stevens: Oh, that’s good.
Thomas Middleditch: Soft pitch, you never know when the fools end. You never know when the nonsense and the pranks will end, and maybe the Body Monster, the spirit of April Fools, is here. It is written, of course. But then I’ve got daylight appreciation day. I think we can really drill into that. I’m sure if you close your eyes and just think of all the fun bits we can mess around with daylight. Or National Lobster Day. Does this sound like fertile ground?
I think Lobster Day vs. April Fools could definitely work out in someone’s favor.
Thomas Middleditch: It’s apparently a National Pets in Film Day.
Dan Stevens: Oh wow. Oh, that’s good. Just meet famous pets, like Lassie.
But then the trick is on you, you think you meet Lassie, and it’s just a dog.
Dan Stevens: A False Lassie. Maybe they’re resurrecting Lassie with sci-fi.
Thomas Middleditch: But then it’s like a weekend at Bernie’s thing, so it’s a weekend at Lassie’s, and they make the dead dog try to be believable next, and he gets a job, and now it’s the CEO, and They’re like, “What are we going to do? We have this dead dog as the CEO of the company!” [Laughs] I’ll see you at the Emmys.
Dan, how about you? What are two holidays you would like to see go to war in the world Solars?
Dan Stevens: Well, it’s probably National Donut Day. Can Thomas confirm this on the list?
Thomas Middleditch: It’s National Donut Day. [Laughs]
Dan Stevens: And throw me another one, just randomly, Thomas.
Thomas Middleditch: There are a lot of food-based ones. It’s also National Fried Chicken Day.
Dan Stevens: Here you go. Fried chicken versus donut, and then they fuse into a chicken-fried donut as the happy resolution.
Thomas Middleditch: It’s like, what’s this little monster man, little buddy? It’s like a chicken-fried donut freak monster, they join. [Laughs]
the duaAbsolutely should“Have their characters together in the Monsterverse
“Chicken Fried Donut, Monsterverse [crossover].”
That’s why I wanted to ask really quickly, before I let you go. You are both in the Monsterverse. I would like to see you together. Have you talked about the possibility of getting the team into the world?
Dan Stevens: We should. We absolutely should.
Thomas Middleditch: We’ll get Legendary on the phone, and we’ll say, “Okay, we’ll do it.” [Laughs] They asked us to
Dan Stevens: Chicken Fried Donut, Monsterverse [crossover]. [Laughs]
Thomas Middleditch: This Kong, Godzilla, Galgaran or whatever, the Gomorrah beast-like thing is, can only be defeated by Chicken Fried Donut, helmed by the two donut pilots, Tin Toms and Dean Dance. It’s like Pacific Rim, right? You need two Jagger pilots to finally work together.
About The Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown October
Spooky stuff ensues when the spirit of HALLOWEEN starts to take over Corvo’s life. “Solar Opposites” centers around a team of four aliens who are evenly split on whether Earth is terrible or awesome. Corvo (Dan Stevens) and Yumiluck (Sean Giambrone) see only the pollution, crass consumerism and human weakness while Terry (Thomas Middleditch) and Jesse (Mary Mack) love TV, junk food and fun. In Season 5 of “Solar Opposites,” now that alien mission partners Terry and Corvo are married, the entire Solar Opposites team is focused on family values.
