Terry and Corvo’s attempts to improve their social status lead to them becoming embroiled in a savage war in Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown October. Created by Justin Roiland and Star Trek: Lower Decks masterminded by Mike McMahan, the animated Hulu show follows the titular family of aliens who come to Earth to escape the destruction of their plan, the Shlorp, and try to acclimate to life with humanity. The alien family consists of group leader Corvo, his husband and puppet specialist Terry, Corvo’s replicant/son Yumyulak, and Terry’s replicant/daughter Jessie.
Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown October is a continuation of the special that aired between seasons 3 and 4, in which Terry and Corvo try to sneak a family into the local country club, although they realize they need to suppress their love for the titular season in order to be accepted. However, before they can do so, a witch comes and curses the family for killing the Great Pumpkin in the previous Halloween special, causing them all to turn into a variety of creepy creatures.

Ahead of the special’s premiere On-screen rant interviewed stars Dan Stevens and Thomas Middleditch to discuss Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown Octoberhow the former adjusted to the fast-paced nature of the series’ dialogue, which holidays they’d like to see war in a future installment, and their thoughts on a potential Monsterverse team-up.
Stevens had to go back to the first issue to prepare forCrazy“Continuation
Middleditch had a very specific reaction to the script
Screen Rant: Dan, it’s great to finally chat with you for this show, Thomas, it’s always a pleasure to see you and talk about you. Solar opposites. Halloween Special Part 2 It’s such a blast from start to finish, a great continuation of the original. Dan, you weren’t able to do the first Halloween special, so what was it like bringing Corvo’s fear of Halloween to life this season?
Dan Stevens: Yeah, it was crazy. I needed to figure out what happened last time. But yeah, it was a lot of fun.
And then, Thomas, when you saw what was going to happen with the return of the Great Pumpkin and the curse of the family, what was your first reaction to the script?
Thomas Middleditch: It was a gif of Macaulay Culkin from Home Alone 2 that looked like this: [fist pumping]. Or a GIF of Jack Nicholson from – whatever with him and Helen Hunt – but there’s a GIF of him nodding, and he has this fucking psychotic expression on his face and he’s nodding. [Laughs]
Stevens followed the lead of his co-stars on the show.High octane“Step
“…Corvo very often has a lot to say.”
Dan, I’d like to turn to you now because one thing I’ve always heard from talking to Thomas, Sean and Mary is that they always get one note: “Faster, faster, faster,” when it comes to dialogue for this show. I’d love to hear what it was like for you to adjust to the pace of this show, especially something as crazy as Halloween Special.
Dan Stevens: Yeah, it’s pretty high octane and I’ve found that it helps if I come to class with a lot of caffeine and just ready to hit the ground running really quickly. Yeah, that’s great, I kind of follow their lead, really. They set the pace in many ways, they set the tone, and Corvo very often has a lot to say. He’s a man of many words and you just need to get them out as quickly as possible.
Terry”Always rush to celebrate the monkey’s paw”
Corvo is trying to stop”Being such a liar about Halloween”
I’d love to hear about your transformation into a ghost for this special, Thomas, and how Terry really feels about it?
Thomas Middleditch: Well, most things he sees, he probably starts by saying, “That’s great!” and then realizes that this is bad. [Laughs] He’s like, “Looks like solar opposites are ghosts, baby!” And then he realizes it stinks and wants to be real so he can fuck his new husband. I just love that he’s always quick to point out the monkey paw situation.
So, Dan, I know it’s obvious that Corvo isn’t necessarily happy about the curse – and I don’t want to give away any spoilers – but it becomes a very touching, full-circle thing for him. What do you think is going through Corvo’s mind during this special adventure?
Dan Stevens: Yeah, I think he’s trying to fit into the human world, as always. He’s decided that he hates Halloween, and part of his journey this time is to come to terms with what makes Halloween so great, and that’s what will ultimately save him and save them all: he has to realize it and not be like that Halloween hoax. I think it’s a wonderful, wonderful journey to, like, appreciate Heidi Klum’s costume party and not just dismiss it.
The duo have some wild ideas for future holiday wars
“It spells itself.”
I love that in addition to being embraced by Corvo, we see one holiday going to war against another holiday. I’m sure there will be more holiday deals in the future. Which two holidays would you like to see pitted against each other in the future of this show?
Dan Stevens: Thomas has a list of great American holidays on his multiscreen station.
Thomas Middleditch: In my data center.
Dan Stevens: I don’t have that luxury.
Thomas Middleditch: This plebate is talking on the phone. [Laughs]
Dan Stevens: What should I do?
Thomas Middleditch: Okay, something interesting that you might have already played is April Fool’s Day.
Dan Stevens: Oh, that’s good.
Thomas Middleditch: Soft serve, you never know when the fools will run out. You never know when the jokes and pranks will end, and perhaps a stupid monster, the spirit of April Fool’s jokes, will appear. It spells itself. But then I have Daylight Appreciation Day. I think we could really delve into this. I’m sure if you close your eyes and just think of all the fun things we could come up with with Daylight. Or National Lobster Day. Does this sound like fertile ground?
I think Lobster Day versus April Fools’ Day could definitely work in someone’s favor.
Thomas Middleditch: Apparently there are national pets on Movie Day.
Dan Stevens: Wow. Oh, that’s good. Just getting to know famous pets like Lassie.
But the thing is, you think you’re meeting Lassie, but it’s just a dog.
Dan Stevens: Fake Lassie. Maybe they’ll resurrect Lassie using science fiction.
Thomas Middleditch: But then it’s like Bernie’s weekend, which is Lassie’s weekend, and they make this dead dog try to be believable, and he gets the job, and now it’s the CEO, and they’re like, “What do we do? We have this dead dog as the CEO of the company!” [Laughs] See you at the Emmys.
Dan, what about you? What two holidays would you like to see in the war in the world? Solariums?
Dan Stevens: Well, maybe there is a National Donut Day. Can Thomas check this on the list?
Thomas Middleditch: There is a National Donut Day. [Laughs]
Dan Stevens: And throw me another one at random, Thomas.
Thomas Middleditch: There are many food-based products. There is also National Fried Chicken Day.
Dan Stevens: That’s it. Fried chicken vs donut and then they merge into a fried chicken donut for a happy ending.
Thomas Middleditch: Who is this little monster, Little Buddy? It’s like a freak monster with fried chicken donuts, they come together. [Laughs]
Duet”Absolutely must“Unite your characters into a Monsterverse team”
“Fried Chicken Donut, Monsterverse [crossover].”
So I wanted to ask you guys real quick before I let you guys go. You’re both from the Monsterverse. I’d love to see you guys on the team. Have you had any conversations about the possibility of creating a team in this world?
Dan Stevens: We have to do it. We absolutely must do this.
Thomas Middleditch: We’ll call Legendary and say, “Okay, we’ll do it.” [Laughs] They begged us for it.f
Dan Stevens: Fried Chicken Donut, Monsterverse [crossover]. [Laughs]
Thomas Middleditch: This Kong, Godzilla, Galgaran or whatever beast-like creature of Gomorrah can only be defeated by the Chicken Fried Donut, piloted by these two donut pilots, Tin Tams and Dean Dance. It’s like Pacific Rim, right? You need two Jaeger pilots to finally work together.
ABOUT Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown October
Spooky events occur as the SPIRIT OF HALLOWEEN begins to take over Corvo’s life. Solar Opposites centers around a team of four aliens who are evenly divided on whether Earth is terrible or amazing. Corvo (Dan Stevens) and Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) see only pollution, crass consumerism and human frailty, while Terry (Thomas Middleditch) and Jessie (Mary Mac) love television, junk food and funny things. In the fifth season of Solar Opposites, now that alien mission partners Terry and Corvo are married, the entire Solar Opposites crew is focused on family values.
