Snoopy Is perhaps the most iconic character in the whole Peanuts catalog (even counting Charlie Brown), and a big reason is that he’s not just one character, but several. Snoopy has no shortage of alter egos Peanuts Cannon, which allows him to go on a number of adventures throughout the series, each reflecting a unique personality. From Snoopy’s “Joe Cool” to “WWI Flying Mouse”, Snoopy wears a number of ‘hats’ in PeanutsIncluding that of “World Famous Tennis Player”.
World Famous Tennis Player is an alter ego of Snoopy’s who first appeared in the Peanuts Comic strip published on June 11, 1970. In the debut comic, world famous tennis pro steps out onto the court, preparing to show the world his unparalleled tennis skills. At least, he would have, if this world famous tennis player was not terrible at tennis. when Snoopy’s opponent served the tennis ballIt zooms past him, forcing Snoopy to do a back flip from the sheer speed of it.
When he gets back on his feet, world famous tennis player says, “I hate it when they serve hard!“, as if there is no other right way to serve the ball in tennis. The first pass alone proves that Snoopy’s ‘tennis pro’ alter ego doesn’t exactly live up to his name, as there seem to be quite a few tennis players (pro or else) who can outmatch him – seemingly with a single quick-serve. However, the initial embarrassment does not dampen Snoopy’s undeserved confidence in his tennis skills, as the world famous tennis player makes a number of subsequent appearances in Peanuts.
Snoopy’s world famous tennis player has no shortage of hilarious moments in Peanuts
Snoopy even finds a mixed doubles partner, Molly Wally
Although he isn’t very good at tennis in his debut comic strip, the tennis pro keeps his head up and doesn’t let his initial failure stop him from getting back on the tennis court. And, after years of dedicated training, with a passion for the game that is second to none, the world famous tennis player is still not very good. Apparently, no amount of heart can make up for an inherent lack of skill, and every Peanuts comic that features world famous tennis players highlights this unfortunate truth.
However, Snoopy realizes that if he really wants to go pro, he doesn’t have to do it alone. Peanuts He eventually introduces the mixed doubles partner of the world famous tennis player, Molly Volley, who plays a number of matches alongside Snoopy – much to her continued frustration. Molly Wally takes the game incredibly seriously, and she actually has the skills to back up her passion for the game. While Snoopy certainly has the passion, he lacks their skills, letting Molly Wally down with every match they play together (in truly hilarious fashion).
The running gag of Snoopy’s tennis pro alter ego is that, no matter how many matches he plays, he never gets better, making his moniker a hilarious misnomer. What makes the ongoing joke constantly funny is Snoopy’s delusional view of his own skills, especially when it’s revealed what his ultimate goal is. It would be one thing if Snoopy was bad at tennis, knew he was bad, but just loved the game for its own sake. However, it’s another matter entirely considering he actually thinks he’s good enough to achieve his ultimate goal of playing at Wimbledon.
Does Snoopy’s world famous tennis player make it to Wimbledon? Somehow, yes
Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (And Don’t Come Back!)
Based on everything readers have seen of Snoopy’s world famous tennis player, it seems obvious that he would never reach Wimbledon (a world famous tennis tournament). Snoopy said he hated it when his opponents served the ball quickly, or even returned the ball during a match – and it was pretty much guaranteed that any opponent he would face at Wimbledon would do both. So, there’s no way Snoopy would ever play on a Wimbledon court, right? Wrong.
In the 1980s Peanuts Movie Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (And Don’t Come Back!)Charlie Brown is an exchange student in France, and Snoopy hitches a ride. The two arrive in London before crossing the English Channel, and in the meantime, Snoopy sneaks off to play tennis at Wimbledon, effectively living the dream of world famous tennis player. However, just because he played at Wimbledon doesn’t mean he belongs there, as Snoopy was quickly kicked off the grounds. However, winning at Wimbledon is not the dream of world famous tennis player, just playing there was enough – and, somehow, Snoopy actually pulled it off.
Interestingly enough, the 1980 animated film wasn’t the first time Snoopy tried to go to Wimbledon. Back in A Peanuts Comic strip arc from June 1976, Snoopy takes a train to Kansas City because that’s where he thinks Wimbledon is. Although he obviously can’t make it, the story arc ends on a happy note for a different reason: Snoopy reunites with his sister, Belle. The family reunion was enough to distract Snoopy from his dream of playing at Wimbledon, until he was finally given the chance again in Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (And Don’t Come Back!).
World Famous Tennis Player May Be Snoopy’s Funniest Alter Ego (For 1 Obvious Reason)
Dogs love to play with tennis balls, and Snoopy is no exception
While Snoopy may have a large number of alter egos Peanuts Cannon, world famous tennis player may be one of the funniest of all time, and that’s because it’s a hilarious take on a dog playing with tennis balls. One would be hard-pressed to find a dog that doesn’t love to play with tennis balls, especially in a game of fetch. However, Snoopy is not like normal dogs. Snoopy has always had human characteristics. Therefore, his inherent desire as a dog to play with tennis balls appeared in a more human-like way, giving life to the world famous tennis player.
