Warning: this article contains spoilers Smile 2.Smile 2 proved that Naomi Scott can and should return as Skye Riley in Smile 3. Fictional pop star Skye was introduced in the 2024 horror sequel, which also stars Rosemarie DeWitt, Lukas Gage, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Ray Nicholson, Dylan Gelula, Raúl Castillo, and Kyle Gallner. Gallner is the only actor in 2022 Smile to return in a major capacity in the new film, reprising the role of original survivor Joel in a prologue that explores the tense moments leading up to the character’s death.
While a third installment in the franchise has yet to be greenlit at the time of writing, the 2024 film’s box office performance means there’s a strong chance of a sequel. Although it shows no signs of becoming a smash hit on the level of the original film, has already raised US$90.1 million against its budget of US$28 millionsurpassing the US$70 million mark, which was probably its break-even point. Smile 2 Reviews were also strong, earning the film an 85% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Skye Riley must be one of the forms of the curse that haunts the next victim in Smile 3
The Smile entity has a consistent characteristic
If the third installment gets the green light, precedent shows how Smile 2 star Naomi Scott may reprise her role as Skye Riley. As the film ended with her death undergoing the curse of the sinister smiling entity, she will now be an apparition that haunts the main character’s visions in the upcoming film. Although the entity takes many smiling forms throughout the two films, one thing it has consistently done is appear in the form of its previous victim.
[Lewis] was seen repeatedly in Skye’s visions throughout the film.
This aspect of the entity’s methodology is perhaps motivated by wanting to emphasize the trauma of witnessing a death in the most complete way possible. This started in the original film, when the main character Rose (Sosie Bacon) was haunted by his dead patient Laura (Caitlin Stasey) and continued when Joel saw Rose in a vision during a blink and miss Smile 2 cameo. Joel then passed the curse on to Lewis (Lukas Gage), who was seen repeatedly in Skye’s visions throughout the film.
Smile 3 may show the full extent of Skye Riley’s death
His death created several new curses
Because the Smile 2 end saw Skye’s death at a concert apparently broadcasting the curse to an entire stadium of peoplethe third film could feature Skye in any number of ways, as her smiling specter haunts several characters. Since the victims were also likely fans of the pop star, Naomi Scott could also reprise her role in several archived interviews or music videos watched by fans who are dealing with the grief of her death before they begin to see her in their own visions.
