Simon Kinberg’s Star Wars trilogy is reportedly “very, very far away,” and will wait until after Star Trek commitments

Simon Kinberg Star Wars trilogy is supposedly “far, far away” in the future, and will not be worked on until he finishes previous commitments with Star Trek. Yesterday, the Star Wars fandom has discovered that Simon Kinberg is working on a new Star Wars trilogy. Very little is known about the project at this stage – reports vary on whether it will be episodes 10-12 or something new — but Kinberg is an experienced writer and producer with a history of working with major franchises. Lucasfilm canceled many Star Wars films over the years, but his background means this has a chance.

According to Disc Newsthere will be no movement on this project for some time. Kinberg has already signed on to restart and lead the Star Trek franchise at Paramount, and a new Star Trek the script was completed by Seth Grahame-Smith with hopes of beginning production in 2025 under the direction of Toby Haynes. Kinberg previously warned Paramount that a Star Wars announcement would break down in negotiations, and he will move on Star Wars when he finishes working with them.

This isn’t the first time Star Wars and Star Trek have faced off

As Puck News notes, there’s a fun sense of history repeating itself here. JJ Abrams released a reboot Star Trek timeline in 2009, and in 2013 he signed with Paramount to a huge overall deal for the franchise. He gave up and went to Lucasfilm to make Star Wars: The Force Awakens – and then left the studio again to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. In fact, Paramount negotiated a payment from DIsney for the inconvenience, reportedly a one-time dose worth less than seven figures.

This situation is clearly quite different; Kinberg intends to fulfill his commitments to Paramount first and foremost, before later moving on to Star Wars. This means that these next Star Wars the films will have to wait a while; But to be fair, Lucasfilm has never been very quick when it comes to greenlighting new ideas. There’s a lot of skepticism in the fanbase about whether Kinberg’s Star Wars the trilogy will even take off.

Our opinion on Simon Kinberg’s proposed Star Wars trilogy

Lucasfilm’s decision to hire Simon Kinberg for a new Star Wars the trilogy may not be particularly inspiring, but it makes sense. Kinberg is an established figure in Hollywood and knows how to work with studios under franchise models. There are unique constraints when it comes to working with franchises where things like continuity and canon are vital, and Kinberg knows how to deal with that; that’s why Lucasfilm and Paramount turned to him at the same time. It’s too early to say whether this trilogy could happen, but Kinberg could potentially make it work.
