Silo Season 2 returns to Apple TV+ on November 15, bringing with it countless new mysteries about the state of civilization revealed in the Season 1 finale. Based on the series of science fiction novels by Hugh Howey, the series follows a curious engineer named Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) who realizes that her community’s confined existence has been a lie perpetuated by the government. Although the extent of the lie (and how much the leaders actually know about the truth) has not yet been revealed, Juliette finished Silo 1st season by entering the outside world and apparently not dying – to everyone’s surprise.
Juliette’s actions ignited new whispers of rebellion in Silo season 2, which Mayor Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins) and Robert Sims (Common) must prevent as Chief of IT and Chief of Judicial Security, respectively. But although Bernard knows more about the truth beyond the Silo than Sims, even he has questions the Covenant can’t answer, and he’ll need to gather all his knowledge before Juliette’s friends at the Mechanic start raising hell.
TelaRant interviewed Robbins and Common about the consequences of Silo season 1 finale, and the actors revealed how Bernard and Sims would deal with the spark of rebellion that Juliette ignited. The duo also teased their respective confidants in Silo Season 2, as the burden of knowledge is difficult to bear alone.
Juliette’s departure lights a flame The Bernard & Sims struggle to launch Silo season 2
“We’re dealing with turmoil and a kind of revolutionary spirit at Silo, and it’s all evolving day by day.”
Screen Rant: Bernard and Robert appear to be staunchly pro-Silo and keepers of its secrets, but each reacts a little differently to Juliette’s final discovery about the exhibit. How many adjustments will Bernard have to make to contain the flames emerging here?
Tim Robbins: Some. We’re dealing with turmoil and a kind of revolutionary spirit at Silo, and everything evolves day by day. So yes, I have to make a lot of difficult decisions. And the same happens [Sims].
Screen Rant: Common, Sims not knowing what Juliette discovered in the end haunts me. How far in the dark is he against Bernard, and will this change his allegiance or spark his own curiosity?
Common: I don’t think it changes the way he operates because he always knew there were some things he didn’t know that Bernard had access to. Bernard is the head of IT and they have always been the custodians of much of the knowledge that is happening in the Silo.
But I think in dealing with the revolutionary spirit, Sims is really aligned with keeping everything safe. And he has several motivations. He cares about the people of Silo, but he also has a family, so there’s a certain something for him. He hopes Bernard sees things the way he sees them too, so that everything can fall into place and they feel like they’ve got the best path.
But there is a discovery in the season that happens, where not everything is going the way any of us want it to, and we have to deal with these difficulties and the revolutionary spirit that is there. We’re just trying to make the best decisions for the good of Silo.
Screen Rant: At the beginning of Season 2, do each of your characters think Juliette is alive out there? Why or why not?
Tim Robbins: I have knowledge about this that no one else has, so I know she’s alive for now. I’m not sure how long this will last.
Common: I’m not sure, but the question is on my mind. Which is a great start for Sims this season because I’ve been a real order-taker; keep things in order and follow the Covenant.
I believe what I’ve been told, so having a question or even thinking just a little glimpse of something is a great place to start this season.
Even Silo villains like Bernard and Sims need confidants in season two
“You can’t do it alone, it’s a lonely place and things can get very dark.”
Screen Rant: There are some things that even Bernard doesn’t know or doubts he might have. Who does he turn to when he doesn’t have the answer?
Tim Robbins: Well, part of the problem is that he doesn’t really have anyone. Sims has a wife to keep him grounded; Bernard cannot have this type of personal attachment because of the job he does. So, it’s a pretty lonely journey.
There is one person he can talk to about this, and she wants nothing to do with him. So, this is part of his fight.
Screen Rant: Speaking of Camille, I really love the look between them in Season 1, where it’s clear they have ambitions for The Sims in the Silo. Can you talk about expanding that relationship in Season 2 and having her as a confidant?
Common: Yes, it’s truly a blessing to have Alexandria Riley as Camille Sims. It added a lot to Sims, just the story of this person and what I represent. [It’s nice] having someone that you can reflect with, that you can be vulnerable with in a lot of ways, and just someone that is really smart and that you trust. You make this pact to stay together and be married and be each other’s confidants and supporters. We need that in life sometimes.
With all the pressures and things that Sims is dealing with, she has been someone who has kept him grounded, inspired and coming up with new ideas. You can’t do it alone, it’s a lonely place and things can get very dark. It’s like, “Wow, what’s life like if you don’t have anyone?” I used to hear people say that to me. When you reach a certain age, you will want to share these things with someone. What you don’t realize is that sharing the good and the bad is necessary; That’s where the partnership really, for me, comes into fruition.
Tim Robbins: I don’t trust her. [Laughs] I don’t like your wife.
Common: Look, I trust her. That’s the most important thing I’ll say. She doesn’t trust him either, exactly.
