Kody behaved badly to maintain control over Christine for years, which is probably why he didn't like David for taking his place and acting differently.

Kody has publicly admitted that he despises Christine. He said he never wants to see her, he labeled her “Machiavellian,” and implied that he made a mistake by marrying her. Despite his harsh comments, Kody's reaction to meeting David proved that he missed Christine. The fact that Kody seemed offended that David met and hugged his grandchildren in front of him showed that he resents him. Kody probably can't accept the fact that his actions turned his life upside down. He can't admit that he pushed Christine onto David.
