In Sonic the Hedgehog #61, Sonic embarks on a mission with his allies to defeat Eggperial City; Shadow is among these allies, and he utilizes Chaos Control in a notable way, charging it with Eggman’s crystals instead of Chaos Emeralds. Shadow doesn’t just perform a Chaos Control in this climactic showdown with Dr. Eggman. He performs three in total; one to teleport the artificial emeralds, one to trap Eggman inside them, and one to teleport them into space before he and his fellow Resistance fighters are caught in their explosion.
Normally, Shadow’s Chaos Control power can only be used when he possesses a Chaos Emerald, as the name implies. This ability allows the user to manipulate reality while being powered by these mystical emeralds, and Shadow is the most proficient with it ever. Sonic character. The fact that he can do this without the usual source shows the evolution of his powers, especially since this isn’t easy at first. When Shadow initially attempts this feat on Sonic the Hedgehog #59, he faces disastrous consequences due to the crystals’ instability compared to real Chaos Emeralds.
Shadow’s iconic rivalry with Sonic turns upside down thanks to this raw display of power
After 23 years, Shadow and Sonic undergo an important role reversal
Sonic’s rivalry with Shadow dates back to the beloved video games that put the blue blur on the map. In 2001, Sonic Adventure 2 introduced Shadow as the “Ultimate Life Form”, created by Gerald Robotnik from Black Doom’s alien DNA to be the strongest being in existence. After fifty years of stasis, Eggman frees him to do his bidding, and he finds himself in opposition to Sonic. Their battles push them both to the limit, until they team up to defeat the giant Biolizard.
Shadow has become a franchise mainstay and even starred in his own solo story in the recently released Sonic X Shadow Generations game. In addition to video game dominance, this rivalry has also continued in the various iterations of Sonic comics. Not discontinued Archie Comics continuity, Shadow and Sonic’s rivalry stems from Shadow’s “feeling” that Sonic is an enemy. Now on IDW Publishing Sonic the Hedgehog series, the two hedgehogs are allies who compete with each other – although Shadow tends to fall short. Considering its long history, Shadow’s new triumph over Sonic has been a long time coming.
Shadow deserves a win after his recent failures to reach Sonic’s level
Sonic’s rival hasn’t been having the best luck lately
Shadow gained this power since he didn’t exactly thrive in Sonic the Hedgehog comics. For example, in Sonic the Hedgehog #19, Shadow joins Sonic in resisting the Metal Virus that has turned civilians into creatures called “Zombots”, seeking only to convert others. Shadow enjoys a fleeting moment of glory as he dominates his opponents with his super speed and combat prowess. However, his arrogance gets the better of him, as he refuses to back away from the fight, facing more enemies than he can handle alone, which results in him being infected by the Metal Virus.

Shadow’s misstep during the Metal Virus infestation isn’t the only case where he was knocked down when he was overtaking Sonic. As mentioned previously, in Sonic the Hedgehog #59, Shadow’s first attempt to access a Chaos Control without real Chaos Emeralds doesn’t go well. The power of the crystals quickly overwhelms him, causing a surge of energy that traps him within the very crystals from which he drew power. It takes Silver the Hedgehog’s encouragement to pull him out of his anguish, and with Silver’s words in mind, he overcomes his failure to reach greater heights.
Sonic may not have Shadow’s chaos control power, but his competition is far from over.
Sonic will always find a way to reach Shadow (and vice versa)
As surprising as Shadow’s latest feat is, it doesn’t mean Sonic is incapable of catching up to his rival; in fact, Sonic has also accomplished many notable feats over the years. In Sonic the Hedgehog #61, just before Shadow’s Chaos Control, Sonic unleashes his own surprising potential when he uses a powerful combo move to destroy Eggperial City. It’s true that his attack requires the help of his friends – including Amy Rose, who has helped him with other exciting combos in the past; however, a testament to how Sonic can still dominate Shadow if he works at it.
