Seven Of Nine Became Star Trek Captain Before Picard Season 3

Seven of Nine by Jeri Ryan actually became a Star Trek captain before the epilogue of Star Trek: Picard season 3, when Captain Seven of the Nine took command of the USS Enterprise-G. The epilogue teases Star Trek: Legacy, one Picard spin-off about the adventures of Captain SevenCommander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) and Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) as the Captain’s Special Advisor. So far, Star Trek: Legacy doesn’t appear to be happening, but fans don’t have to wait for a new Star Trek show that you may not come to see Seven of Nine in charge.

Star Trek: Picard season one caught up with Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) years after Picard retired from Starfleet, when a chance meeting with Dahj Asha (Isa Briones) launched Picard’s next mission. Picard separated from Starfleet on bad terms, so Starfleet refused to lend Picard a ship to investigate Dahj’s mysterious origin and rescue his twin sister, Soji, from the Romulans. Instead of, Admiral Picard hired former Starfleet captain Cristóbal Rios (Santiago Cabrera), captain of the civilian freighter La Sirena. During the mission, a stop at Freecloud saw La Sirena’s crew pick up a familiar Fenris Ranger: Star Trek: VoyagerThat’s seven out of nine.

As a newly reinstated Starfleet officer, Captain Rios couldn’t take La Sirena with him, but Seven of Nine could use La Sirena for her job as a Fenris Rangerso it made sense for Rios to give the freighter to Seven. At just 85.6 meters, La Sirena was not a large ship, but it still had enough cargo space to take supplies where they were needed most. Seven of the Nine skipped cosmetic repairs to La Sirena in favor of completing missions, much to Rios’ dismay, but this just shows how Seven still prioritized efficiency over fixing a few dents.

Why Seven of the Nine Were Always Destined to Be Captains

Seven of Nine was always destined to be a Star Trek captain from both an in-universe perspective and a narrative point of view. Under the wing of Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) in Star Trek: VoyagerSeven was challenged to grow as an individual. Between the Doctor’s (Robert Picardo) classes and Janeway’s guidance, Seven’s blueprint for humanity included being a leader. Even in TravelerSeven showed leadership potential as a mentor to Naomi Wildman (Scarlett Pomers), Icheb (Manu Intiraymi) and Travelerof the former Borg children. Whether Seven of Nine joined Starfleet or not, Seven was created to inherit Janeway’s values.

Narratively speaking, Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine was destined to be a Star Trek captain simply because Seven is a popular Star Trek character. Why Star Trek the protagonists are most often the captains of their programs, and Star Trek: Picard evolved from a Star Trek show about Sete de Nove, Arc of seven in Picard needed to end with Seven of Nine in the captain’s chair somehow. If Captain Seven of Nine hadn’t ended up in Starfleet, Fenris Ranger Seven of Nine might have remained captain of his first command in Star Trek: PicardLa Sirena.
