Prometheus should have been the first chapter of an original story instead of a Foreigner prequel and its sequel, Alien: Allianceprove it. THE Foreigner the franchise is finally back with not only the well-received Alien: Romulus but also with the next Alien: Earth show. As Romulo, Alien: Earth promises to be a return to form for the franchise, although it’s teasing a major retcon by having a Xenomorph on Earth before the events of the first film. Regardless, the fact is that Foreigner has since moved away from Ridley Scott’s prequels.
Scott returned to the Foreigner franchise 33 years after directing the first film to direct a prequel that promised to reveal the true origins of the Xenomorph. Prometheus‘premise was enough to retell Foreigner vs. Predatoreal majority of Foreigner stories from other media, but given that the franchise never had a solid canon, these retcons were arguably for the better. However, not only was it Prometheus a very controversial film, but its sequel was a box office disappointment that wasted most of the great ideas Scott presented in the 2012 film.
Alien: Covenant was too much of an Alien prequel and not enough of a Prometheus sequel
Covenant threw away most of what Prometheus set up
The biggest problem with Alien: Alliance It’s just that it wasn’t worth all the stories that Prometheus configured and preferred to be a more traditional Foreigner film. While Covenant revisited David and dealt with the consequences of Prometheusit worked like another science fiction slasher in which a group of people have to survive the Xenomorph. All the mystery and new ideas of Prometheus sat in the back seat Covenantwhile the classic Foreigner elements became more prominent. Covenant even featured a more traditional Xenomorph instead of the proto-creature of Prometheus.
In hindsight, Alien: Alliance it was too much Foreigner prequel instead of being a true Prometheus sequence.
Alien: Alliance It’s also a more straightforward film compared to Prometheus. It takes a while to understand what Prometheus is even trying to say, while Covenant It doesn’t bring as many nuances and tells a simpler story about a group of explorers trying to survive after realizing they’ve been trapped. Michael Fassbender’s David is still as fascinating as he was in Prometheusbut Covenant never does things justice Prometheus promised. Very little new information about the Engineers is revealed, and the sequel focuses entirely on David’s Xenomorph experiments.

In hindsight, Alien: Alliance it was too much Foreigner prequel instead of being a true Prometheus sequence. While the Foreigner the franchise is no stranger to switching to an entirely different cast, with only a few faces returning between films, Covenant feel very disconnected from Prometheus. It seemed almost as if Covenant I was skipping a story that should have happened later Prometheus and take the series in a different, safer direction. The third act of Covenant It’s like “Foreigner” as may be, which was fun to see, but not as interesting as what Prometheus sequence could have been.
Ridley Scott’s Alien prequels were at their best when they weren’t trying to be aliens
Prometheus introduced a whole new story that deserved to continue
It seems paradoxical that a prequel franchise would have its best moments when it wasn’t trying to be a prequel, but that was the case with Prometheus and Covenant. The idea that Ridley Scott had for the possible origin of the Xenomorph evolved into a much larger story about the origins of the human race and our place in the universe, which seemed more interesting than learning how the perfect organism came to be. Part of what he did Foreigner It’s so good that neither the characters nor the audience knew what that creature was.
ForeignerThe titular creature barely appears in the film, but it’s still one of the most iconic movie monsters of all time. THE Foreigner the franchise probably didn’t need to explain how and where the Xenomorph came to be, much less make an entire franchise about it. That said, the way Prometheus combined your Foreigner lore and retcons with an original story centered around David were very interesting. Prometheus was not without flawsand it could have been an even better movie with some changes, but it had some great ideas.
The search for the meaning of life and the philosophical questions that accompany the opportunity to meet your creator were just some of the aspects that made Prometheus much more than just one Foreigner prequel. Much of this was lost in Covenantwhich, despite bringing back David and referencing Shaw, was more concerned with giving the Xenomorph an origin story. ONE Covenant the sequel may have brought the story full circle and tied everything back to Prometheusbut it is impossible to say, as this never happened.
Covenant being just another alien movie made it less interesting than Prometheus
Covenant Wasn’t All That Different From Previous Alien Movies
Many of the things they did Prometheus so interesting were lost in Alien: Alliancewhich is even more disappointing considering that a third entry in Ridley Scott’s prequel franchise never happened. Although it made sense to move on Prometheus and Covenant – Foreigner: The critical and commercial success of Romulus proves this – these films could have led to something very special. Prometheus planted all the seeds for a bigger, bolder sequel, yet Covenant wasted most of them. From Elizabeth Shaw’s off-screen death to no mention of the Engineers, Covenant I barely felt like one Prometheus sequence.
When Prometheus ends, we are left with hope that the next film will see David and Shaw finding the Engineers’ home planet. However, not only is Shaw dead in Covenantbut we found nothing more about the Engineers. It has been widely accepted that the race that David eliminated among Prometheus and Covenant it was not that of the Engineers, but rather one of their many creations across the universe. Going from Prometheus to Covenant can make someone feel like they skipped a movie and jumped to the end of a trilogy that had no middle chapter.
Prometheus could have been practically the same movie even if it wasn’t linked to an alien
Prometheus may have worked better as its own franchise
The fact that Alien: Alliance I tried so hard to be good Foreigner film and it was worse because it proves that Prometheus it could have been practically the same movie, even if it was an original story instead of a prequel. Of course, all in Prometheus is leading to the creation of the Xenomorph, but the themes and characters work well on their own. Someone who has never watched Foreigner can easily enjoy Prometheus. The best things about Scott’s 2012 prequel had little to do with the Foreigner films.
It’s hard to imagine what Prometheus would have felt like the start of its own franchise rather than a Foreigner prequel, but it’s no exaggeration to say it could have worked. The reception at Prometheus may also have been more positive in this scenario, since Foreigner comparisons and debates about retcons would have been avoided. Some of the Foreigner Since then, comics have revisited elements of Prometheus and Alien: Alliancebut the story will probably never be completed on the big screen.
