Scrubs Season 9 Wasted a Perfect Moment That Would Have Been So Much Better in the Revival

Although Rub season 9 is widely considered disappointing, the sitcom’s final airing included some great moments – but one of the scenes in question could have been even more elevated if it hadn’t taken place in 2010 and could have been shown for the first time when the sitcom returns. THE Rub The revival may not have been officially confirmed yet, but showrunner Bill Lawrence’s announcement of it being “so close“making new episodes is certainly cause for optimism. Therefore, although the Faculty of Medicine episodes ended all nine seasons of Rub bad, the medical comedy could finally be redeemed.

Rub season 9 shook up the show’s established formula with a new setting and a new batch of characters that became the main focus. Many of the original cast members were still involved, but their roles were reduced to make room for the new actors. After Rub Season 8’s perfect ending, having Season 9 softly rebooted was a huge risk that didn’t really pay off and detracted from the final scenes of the penultimate season. That being said, the Faculty of Medicine the premiere started with a moment that would have been a brilliant way to start Rub season 10.

Turk and JD’s Reunion In The Scrubs Season 9 Premiere Is Brilliant (But It Happened Too Soon)

The Faculty of Medicine probably should not have included the moment

Rub Season 9, Episode 1, “Our First Day of School,” includes a reunion between Zach Braff’s John “JD” Dorian and Donald Faison’s Chris Turk. The close friendship between the two characters was one of the emotional and comedic cores of the sitcom, so seeing them run towards each other in slow motion with their arms wide open is very memorable for them. Although it works well as a scene, It’s a shame that this happened in Rub season 9.

While it would be impossible to reserve the moment for a potential revival some 15 years later, seeing Turk and JD do it for the first time in Rub Season 10 would have been amazing. JD’s confession to Denise immediately after hugging his best friend would also have been incredibly consistent with the duo’s established dynamic and their desire for an unnecessary theatrical reunion. After Denise questioned them about when they last saw each other, JD’s response was, “This morning, we hitchhiked. But we haven’t worked together in over a year“, is the icing on the cake.

Season 9’s “Guy Love” reunion scene is a perfect example of why the med school episodes didn’t work

The sitcom’s brief Med School era was very unfocused

JD and Turk running towards each other, soundtracked by “Guy Love” by Rub the musical episode’s soundtrack, it’s definitely the kind of moment that belongs in the sitcom’s original era rather than the Faculty of Medicine run. Including it in Rub Season 9 is a bit confusing as it continues to highlight the main characters’ dynamics rather than shifting the focus to Kerry Bishé’s Lucy Bennett and the other new interns. Braff’s presence was only supposed to be temporary to help with the transition, then by that logic he should have taken a backseat much sooner.

Rub Season 9 was originally planned to be a spinoff rather than a direct continuation, but Disney was cautious about a difficult revamp of a show they just acquired from NBC.

Rub season 9 was originally planned to be a spinoff rather than a direct sequel, but Disney was cautious about a difficult revamp of a show it had just acquired from NBC. As such, the separation between Rub seasons 8 and 9 are even more blurry than perhaps they could have been. Having such a big moment between Turk and JD – as great as it was – makes things even more uncertain. Although the Faculty of Medicine episodes reserved a promising future for the Rub franchise, the latest format’s indecision about what it wanted to be ended up hurting any chance of continuing.

Scrubs Season 10 has yet to recreate a similar Turk and JD moment

The Scrubs revival could include an even better Faison and Braff reunion

As misguided as it was to make such a big deal about Turk and JD working together again, including the scene in Rub Season 9 is a testament to how important their friendship was to the show’s success. So, although there are several reasons why Faculty of Medicine should have resisted the urge to include this scenethat doesn’t mean Rub revival cannot do something very similar. Given that much more time could have passed since Turk and JD were last housemates, the scene’s potentially updated counterpart has a strong chance of carrying even more weight than the Season 9 version.

Rub Season 9’s Turk and JD reunion isn’t the first time the series has highlighted the two characters getting back together after time apart.

Rub Season 9’s Turk and JD reunion isn’t the first time the series has highlighted the two characters getting back together after time apart. Node Rub In the Season 4 premiere, ‘My Old Friend’s New Friend,’ the best friends struggle to find each other in the halls of Sacred Heart Hospital after Turk returns from his honeymoon with Carla – and the entire sequence is hilarious. So there is some evidence to suggest that doing something similar for the third time in Rub revival could be equally effective.
