With the power of abjuration up her sleeve, Amaranth is set to be a formidable force against Scarlet Witch and really any of the supernatural and magical beings in the Marvel Universe. Although its origins are still shrouded in mystery, it becomes clear in Scarlet Witch #6 that her power already scared Agatha Harkness, which is apparently why she tries to make it Wanda’s problem instead of hers. In a move that not even Scarlet Witch could pull off, Amaranth’s ability to completely dismantle a magical spell and absorb it with a purple glow illustrates her extraordinary untapped potential..

Wanda tells Amaranth that her power of abjuration is an advanced ability that was discovered by an ancient sorceress who is also a descendant of Wanda’s fellow Avenger, Storm. Since Scarlet Witch’s young companion seems to easily use this magic-suppressing ability without even truly knowing its power or its limits, she could become a real problem for any magic user in the universe, especially as she continues her training with Wanda. Fortunately for Marvel’s magical heroes, Amaranth appears to be following a hero’s path with previews of her place on the new legacy superhero team, New Champions.

At the end of Amaranth’s debut issue, Agatha reappears to better clarify why she handed the young sorceress over to Wanda. With the potential companion’s anti-magical powers causing fear in the witch, Agatha handed Amaranth over to Wanda as a last-ditch effort to defeat the new character. It is also revealed that Agatha sent the Eliminator after her two former students of the trade, hoping to help Wanda realize that the New Champion must be defeated. Although Amaranth’s power is a serious threat to Scarlet Witch, Wanda is still determined to be a mentor despite Agatha’s best efforts.

As Amaranth debuts with extraordinary abilities that could easily defeat her hero mentor, Scarlet Witch has the opportunity to empower or attempt to defeat her new companion.

With Agatha trying to get rid of her, Amaranth already has a target on her back due to her power being a detriment to Marvel’s magical community. While it’s still unclear where she came from or how powerful she might actually be, the young sorceress made an immediate impact on the universe by eliminating a villain that not even her extremely powerful Avenger teacher could take down. As Amaranth debuts with extraordinary abilities that could easily defeat her hero mentor, the Scarlet Witch has the opportunity to empower or attempt to defeat his new companion.
