While the narrative splits focus between all seven world leaders to an extent, the polite and put-upon Hilda often tries to serve as the group’s mediator. This is somewhat complicated by the egos of her compatriots, her own cultural blunders, and an attraction to Maxime that becomes more obvious as the film progresses.

These troubles, along with a history of womanizing that seems to have caused real strife between him and his wife, leave Maxime the most openly emotional and adrift member of the G7 summit. however, Maxime’s impulsive nature makes him a more active leader than the rest of the groupforcing him into an unlikely leadership role.

Snarky and confident (with an unfortunate habit of falling asleep at odd hours), Wolcott spends much of the film dealing with the realities of his age and diminishing physical strength. Wolcott also forms one of the most unexpectedly sweet relationships in the film, developing a surprisingly close friendship with another member of the G7.

World leaders without a world to lead

Rumorsis largely focused on the leaders attending the G7 summit in GermanyWith the other four members of the group serving as the film’s other primary characters. Denis Menochet (Inglourious Basterds) appears as Sylvain Broulez, the boisterous President of France. Nicky Amuka-Bird (Avenue 5) plays Cardoso Devindt, the short-lived Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Rolando Ravello (Diaz) plays the Italian Prime Minister Antonio Lamorte, the sweetest member of the G7. The cast is rounded out by Takehiro Hira (Gran Turismo), who plays Tatsura Iwasaki, the Prime Minister of Japan.

most of Rumors is focused on the seven lettersEspecially as they are separated from the rest of the top. However, there are a handful of other characters in the film. The most important of the other characters is Celestine Sproul. Played by Alicia Vikander (ex machina), Celestine is the Secretary General of the European Commission and a former flame of Maxime’s. There is also Jonas, played by Zlatko Burić (Triangle of sadness), which works out of the event’s main hall. Rumors Keeps the focus on the characters, preventing them (and the audience) from escaping the absurdist apocalypse unfolding around them.
